Eric Bogle - The Band Played Waltzing Matilda

****Note added 25 April 2010: When I was asked to create this presentation for a Remembrance Day assembly, I didn't know how I would show an "anti-war" song at an event that is supposed to honour our veterans. At the same time, war and military conflict was such a distant concept for our students, I wanted to some how make history relevant to them, let alone an "Australian" song that most of the our middle school students have never heard. The more I listened to Bogle's words, the more I realized that this song was about more than a moment in history. It's about how history repeats itself and the great sacrifices that are made during war and how futile it all is if we fail to learn from our mistakes. Making the transition from B/W to full colour to coincide with Bogle's words "We started all over again," I wanted to show how war is part of our past, present and (unfortunately) future. Great sacrifices have been made because of war. Bogle asks "What are they marching for?" I say they are marching to honour those sacrifices. If any veteran is offended by this video, I truly do apologize. ************************* April 25 - ANZAC Day November 11 - Remembrance Day "Waltzing Matilda" is a very famous Australian folk song and a "Matilda" was the name given to the pack that Australian farm workers carried on their backs. To "Waltz Matilda" meant to carry your pack of belongings through the bush. The song "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" by Eric Bogle is about Australian ...

Silly Slang Song by Eric Bogle

Do you remember the day that if you said that you were gay It meant with joy that you could sing and shout A fairy was enchanting and dressing up and camping Was something you did with the scouts That care free age when an urgent case of aids Was powdered milk we sent to the Sahara A fruit was something nice to eat a poof was something for your feet And a queen was an old tart in a tiara Chorus: Ah look what we've done to the old mother tongue It's a crime the way we've misused it It's been totally tis woggled, crumb and blonged and golly woggled And we've strangled, mangled frangled and abused it Ah those far off times when a bong meant a chime And a buzz was a noise insecticidal And joint was something between bones and getting really stoned Only happened to bad people in the Bible When if you had a bad trip it meant you fell and broke your hip Cold turkey just meant Christmas at Aunt Dottie's Coke was something that you burned; a smack was something that you earned From your mumzie wumzie when you had been naughty Chorus The years have gone I'm afraid when only eggs got laid And only the rhinoceros got horny Only kangaroos jumped and only camels humped Getting stuffed meant a little taxidermy Swing was for trapezes and Tarzan's chimpanzees Tossing off was something Scotland did with cabers Now it means something quite obscene And heavy ugly scene is any movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger Chorus Chorus CODA: They're only words and words are what we use When we got sod ...
Eric Bogle -- Bloody Rotten Audience

Howdy, folks! The ending to this song got cut out by LITERALLY half a second. I do not feel like re-recording it, as this would be the fourth time I've had to do it. I shall re-record it at a later date, but, as I said, it's only missing a half second. Anyhoo.. It's a fantastic song. It comes from the album Plain and Simple. Hope ya dig it! --Lyrics-- Well, here's a song I've written, specifically for you Who sit down in the audience and talk through all I do I cannot understand it cause I'm pretty good, you see So there must be something wrong with you, there's nothing wrong with me [Chorus:] You're a bloody rotten audience whilst I am very good If brains were made of oak and ash then you'd have balsa wood I'm ethnic and authentic and I'm really full of class While you're ignorant, you're cultureless, you're philistines en masse. I'm an artist and authority on music and what's more I'm incredibly informative on folksong and folklore I'm a wonderful performer and so you all must be So bloody thick and stupid not to like the like of me [Chorus] I'm a folkie and that's obvious, you can tell it by me clothes And when I sing traditional, I sing it through me nose And if you persist on talking every time I sing a song I'll fix you with 'Bold Robin Hood,' that's eighty verses long! [Chorus] And when I sing contemporary, me heart and soul is pure I must be bloody brilliant, cause my writing's so obscure My hero's Leonard Cohen, I dig him perfectly But I must be so much better ...

Roasting the Perfect Turkey with Chef Justin Bogle at Gilt

If you've ever had a turkey that's too tough, too dry or just poorly cooked, you'll be thankful for this handy Thanksgiving tutorial. From brining to trussing, Executive Chef Justin Bogle at Gilt Restaurant shows us step-by-step how to roast the perfect bird. Tip: Brining is similar to marinating where meat is soaked in a salt solution Tip: Use one cup of salt for every gallon of water Tip: You can brine the turkey and keep in fridge for up to 24 hours Tip: Turkey should stay at below 40° until roasting time Tip: Rinse the turkey well -- any residual brine could result in unwanted salty crust Tip: You can find kitchen twine at your local butcher shop or counter Tip: When trussing, you want limbs as close to the body as possible Tip: Roast turkey at 325° (estimate 1 hour for every 5 lbs. of turkey) Tip: For a moist meat, baste the turkey halfway through cooking with stock Tip: Let turkey rest for 15-20 before carving and serving Trick: Brine helps meat absorb aromatics and water, resulting in more tender turkey Trick: Fill cooler with brine mixture and keep cold with Ziploc bags of ice Trick: Trussing (securing limbs with twine) helps bird roast evenly Trick: Bring legs up and cross them, bring wings up Trick: Tucking in the wings and legs keeps them from burning Trick: Use a medicinal syringe to inject stock directly into the meat Technique: Add hot water mixture to cold water (otherwise boiling water will cook the turkey) Technique: If you can't fit turkey brine pot in ...

Eric Bogle & John Munro : Front Row Cowboy

On Saturday mornings I'd ride to the movies, Booted and spurred on my horse made of tin Tie-up my cayuse outside on the pavement Lay down my sixpence and mosey on in. I'd sit in the front row with the other young cowboys Waitin' for Roy to appear on the screen Waitin' for Roy and his golden horse Trigger, To carry me off into ma favourite dream. Roy Rogers, Roy Rogers, Oh you were my hero, A man made of steel on a horse made of gold Together we rode through the days of my childhood Memories like heroes, they never grow old. Together we rode over mountains and valleys Camped out a night 'neath the wide prairie sky, We'd sing cowboy songs as we sat by the campfire While out in the darkness a coyote cried Yi-pi-tie-yi-yo baked beans and coffee, Tall tales and true as we sat by the fire Then up in the morning and away we'd go riding. Two gay caballeros, two heroes for hire. And now I'm a man, and I've hung up my six-gun No more do I ride on a horse made of tin. Now I ride subways, and freeways and railways, Instead of a six-gun I now wield a pen. But part of my heart will always be ridin' Along the bright canyons and the wild forest ways Along with Roy Rogers my faithful companion, Into the sunset of my childhood days. He was my friend, yes, he was my friend. He never let me down. He was honest and faithful right up to the end I loved Roy Rogers 'cause he was my friend.

499. Can You Sing Any Dylan? (Eric Bogle)

As I approach my 500th upload, I am doing a few songs that look at what it means to be a folksinger. The actual title of this song is "The Traditional Folksinger's Lament For The Passing Of The Three-Chord Traditional Folksong," but, apart from being too similar to the title of the song I uploaded yesterday, there's no way I can fit it into the title box. I suppose I'm a little uneasy about singing a song that makes fun of my hero, Bob Dylan, but then I'm a big fan of Eric Bogle too, and I'm sure he doesn't mean us to take the song too seriously. Hope you enjoy it. You can hear a playlist of my satirical and parody songs here: www.youtube.com For lyrics and chords of all my songs please see my website: www.raymondcrooke.com

Eric Bogle-And the band played Waltzing Matilda

Now when I was a young man I carried me pack And I lived the free life of the rover. From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback, Well, I waltzed my Matilda all over. Then in 1915, my country said, "Son, It's time you stop ramblin', there's work to be done." So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun, And they marched me away to the war. And the band played "Waltzing Matilda," As the ship pulled away from the quay, And amidst all the cheers, the flag waving, and tears, We sailed off for Gallipoli. And how well I remember that terrible day, How our blood stained the sand and the water; And of how in that hell that they call Suvla Bay We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter. Johnny Turk, he was waitin', he primed himself well; He showered us with bullets, and he rained us with shell -- And in five minutes flat, he'd blown us all to hell, Nearly blew us right back to Australia. But the band played "Waltzing Matilda," When we stopped to bury our slain, Well, we buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs, Then we started all over again. And those that were left, well, we tried to survive In that mad world of blood, death and fire. And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive Though around me the corpses piled higher. Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head, And when I woke up in me hospital bed And saw what it had done, well, I wished I was dead -- Never knew there was worse things than dying. For I'll go no more "Waltzing Matilda," All around the ...
