Biber - Rosary Sonata #1: The Annunciation

[Finale] Performed by Andrew Manze, violin Richard Egarr, organ *Biber's Rosary sonatas are amoung the most remarkable sets of violin pieces ever assembled. It was not widely known during the composer's lifetime, but a large part of Biber's present-day fame rests on this collection. Only a single copy of these sixteen pieces survives, now in the Bavarian State Library, Munich. It is missing a title page, so the set has been assigned various dates, ranging from the early 1670s, when Biber arrived in Salzburg, to the mid-1680s. It has also been known by various names over the years: Rosary Sonatas, Mystery Sonatas, or Copper-Engraving Sonatas. This last derives from the small engravings at the head of each piece. One of the things that makes these pieces unusual is the prevalence of scordatura; in fact, all of the sonatas require different tunings. The fifteen tunings approximately form a circle, from easy to difficult and back. At the start, for the "Annunciation", the violin is tuned normally. Through the five Joyful Mysteries the tunings become more advanced, though still quite conventional. For the Sorrowful Mysteies, Biber uses four unique tunings, extremely arduous for the violin from the point of view of tension and clashing vibrations within the instrument, but then for the <b>...</b>

Biber No.90 midget submarine
The Biber (German for "beaver") was a German midget submarine of the Second World War. Armed with two externally mounted 21-inch (53 cm) torpedoes or mines, they were intended to attack coastal shipping. They were the smallest submarines in the Kriegsmarine. The Biber was hastily developed to help meet the threat of an Allied invasion of Europe. This resulted in basic technical flaws that, combined with the inadequate training of their operators, meant they never posed a real threat to Allied shipping, despite 324 submarines being delivered. One of the class's few successes was the sinking of the the cargo ship Alan A. Dale. A number have survived in museums including one example that has been restored to operational condition. * Biber No.90 This craft is displayed at the Imperial War Museum, London. It was one of three Bibers launched from the canal at Hellevoetsluis in late December 1944. It was found sinking 49 miles NE of Dover on 29 December 1944, its crewman had failed to properly close the engine exhaust system and died from resultant carbon monoxide poisoning. HMS Ready took it in tow and, even when it sank close to Dover harbour entrance, the Royal Navy still raised it and subjected it to extensive trials. One oddity discovered during the initial search of the boat was: a bottle hidden under the seat and inside was a document in English, which, romantic as it read, appeared to have some bearing :on upon the capture of the submarine, and possibly the explanation <b>...</b>

Celebrated on January 6, itis the day celebrating "Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar", three Wise Men, who saw a bright star, followed it to Bethlehem and found there the Christ-child and presented Him with gold, frankincense and myrrh. (Though this is biblically incorrect, in that the Three Kings actually took two years to arrive, making many manger scenes incorrect!!!-lol!) January 6, the last day of Christmas, comes with its own traditions, rituals and symbols. This Cantata was composed for that particular "Feast Day" of the Roman Catholic Church of which Heinrich Biber served. It is believed that this Cantata was composed while Biber was still in employment in Bohemia before eventually settling in Salzburg.
