Going, going, gone: Braintree shop tools being auctioned
The wrenches fixed hundreds of Braintree High School students' cars. And the saws and drills built thousands of birdhouses and spice racks. And they will all be placed on the auction block this Saturday. "It's the sale of the century," said Tom Mahar, the school department's head custodian. Every table saw, screwdriver and hand jack that once filled the high school's now-closed wood and auto shops will be up for grabs at the auction. The lots range from complete sets of socket wrenches and hand saws to a small airplane engine and hydraulic car lift. Other items include a cabinet filled with hundreds of drill bits and saw blades, the wood shop's remaining stock of hardwood lumber, a half-dozen full-sized wood lathes, car jacks, belt sanders and hammers. "There were enough tools in here for 30 kids to be working at the same time," said Peter Kress, the school department's business manager. And high-end tools, at that. One of the lots up for auction, for example, is a full cabinet of Snap-on brand tools. The auction will be conducted by Strategic Auctions Inc. and is open to the public. Mahan remembers when the industrial arts wing of Braintree High School buzzed with activity. Braintree police investigated Amy Bishop in 1986 shooting
Braintree Police Chief Paul Frazier called a press conference Saturday about reports that Dr. Amy Bishop, a suspect in the shootings at the University of Alabama at Huntsville, was investigated and let go after a 1986 shooting of her brother at their Braintree home. Chief Frazier said that reports from that shooting incident were missing from the files and that he recalls that officers at the time were very upset about the release of Amy Bishop.

Study planning for Braintree herring run
The state is planning a study for this summer that will examine the costs and challenges associated with helping a million or more herring spawn in Great Pond in Braintree. The study, commissioned by the state Division of Marine Fisheries, will look at the possibility of constructing a fish ladder in the Monatiquot cq River behind the old Armstrong factory site off Plain Street. Herring, which spend most of their lives in salt water but migrate up local rivers in the spring to spawn, have recently returned to the Monatiquot River in large numbers. Their progress to Great Pond, the river's headwaters, is currently impeded by a large rock outcrop near an MBTA commuter rail bridge and the Hollingsworth Dam behind the Armstrong property. The ladder would allow the fish to continue to run up the Monatiquot, into the Farm River and Sunset Lake, and eventually to Great Pond. Herring were common in Great Pond hundreds of years ago but disappeared as the area became more and more densely settled. In recent years, volunteers with the Fore River Watershed Association have cleared debris and obstacles from the riverbed in East Braintree. Now thousands of the fish can be seen well upstream. Association member Carl Pawlowski said improving herring run could have a tremendous impact on the Fore River basin, including increased numbers of bluefish and pickerel, which feed on herring.

Combat sports to be demonstrated at remodeled Braintree gym
As a tae kwon do champion, Marcellino Amaro showed no hesitation in snapping off a series of lightening lightning-fast kicks and punches around the head and torso of Jay Brooks. Amaro was also willing to be tossed around and run through a series of submission moves by the smaller Brooks, a judo and jujitsu champion himself. But the Braintree resident still gets a little uneasy remembering his training sessions with boxing trainers Tim Stanton and Tim Fitzgerald. "They're the only ones that got me close to puking," joked Amaro, 40, who recently won the Worcester Classic. "But it was a humbling experience. It was great." Despite the competitive nature of their sports, the four men consider themselves good friends. And all four teach their trades at the sprawling Bayshore Athletic Club in Braintree. The instructors are teaming up to host a combat sports night at the athletic club tomorrow night from 7:30 to 9:30. Students from the three clubs the men run -- TNT Boxing, Strictly All Contact Tae Kwon Do, and Phoenix Judo, will be demonstrating skills from the sports. "This is the only gym around that has all three disciplines in one place," said Brooks, 38, of Quincy, and the head instructor with of the Phoenix Judo club. Braintree: Crooked New Schindler Hydraulic Elevator @ South Shore Plaza, South Garage
We ride a new elevator, recently installed in the South Parking Garage, at South Shore Plaza, Briantree, Massachusetts. This is a new Schindler 330A. It rode okay, although when it makes it's bump halfway up to 2, the elevator leans more towards the front, as indicated by the gap between the window, and the shaft's windows. Another fine, High-Quality Schindler elevator! :P Like any holeless, it's a tad bumpy, which also could explain why it's crooked to begin with. Door Close "Works", meaning they close fast after a selection is made, almost similar to when the buttons work on Dover/ThyssenKrupp elevators.

08/14/2011 - Just before 1800 hours Braintree MA struck two alarms for a house fire at 20 Richardi Lane. Companies had heavy smoke showing from a one and a half occupied dwelling. Braintree mayoral candidates pledge change in second debate
An in-house legal department, town trash collectors and new department heads are among the changes the four candidates for mayor say they would make if elected the Braintree's first chief executive. Three of the four candidates said they would support dropping Kopel man & Paige as the town's attorney and instead hire a town solicitor. Joseph Sullivan said he feels the town could cut its annual spending on legal fees by a third if the function were brought back in-house. Paul Walsh said he would conduct a formal search for a town attorney, not just appoint someone he knows. Joseph Powers was the lone candi date opposed to the idea, arguing that the town specifically chose to hire an outside law firm in 2000, following the resignation of longtime town attorney Arthur Smith. He said that his oppo nents wanted to "go back in time," and such a move still wouldn't eliminate the need to sometimes hire outside law firms to work on legal cases on occasion. The candidates made their state ments at a debate held at town hall last night co-sponsored by the Republican and Democratic town committees. More than 100 residents -- many of whom wore partisan stickers or shirts -- attended the debate, which was broadcast live shown by the town's cable TV station. Braintree: "Paul Blart Attacked Here" Mall Elevator (Montgomery/KONE) @ South Shore Plaza
This time, I have a special treat for you, the Main Mall Elevator at South Shore Plaza, Braintree, Massachusetts. It is a Montgomery/KONE Hydraulic, which was used in the movie "Paul Blart, Mall Cop". This is one of a few extra places used as "West Orange Pavilion", as the Burlington Mall was for the most part, the ficticious location. On top of riding it a few times, we get a look out of the elevator where Paul Blart stood, and point to the window he got attacked from. Of course, the normal stuff in an elevator video is also included (the movie factoids were repeated, as the guy in the wheelchair didn't know why I was recording the lift). Although not truly brave in the attempt, we also get right up to Security at times, and kept recording.

Braintree drug raid nets crack cocaine
BRAINTREE -- John C. James was sitting on the couch in his girlfriend's Braintree Village apartment shortly before 8 pm Friday. A delivery man was on his way with Chinese food, and a movie featuring Rowan Atkinson was on the TV. Suddenly, there was a commotion in the parking lot outside the building: a police officer had stopped a vehicle and was using the cruiser's loudspeaker to order the driver to show his hands. But what James didn't know was that the traffic stop was actually a decoy designed to divert his attention away from the team of drug detectives entering the building from a rear entrance and lining up outside his door. Police had quietly crept up the stairs, the only noise coming from a battering ram clanging against the metal stairwell. The crew paused briefly outside the apartment, standing next to a pink baby stroller, before bursting in with guns drawn. They ordered James face-down on the carpet. One of the two small children in the apartment at the time began to wail, and James' girlfriend pleaded with police to tell her what was happening. The Chinese food showed up as James was being led out of the building in handcuffs. The bust was another parry in the ongoing battle by local police departments to crack down on drugs in their suburban neighborhoods. With the help of the South Shore Drug Task Force, Braintree drug detectives say they found about 11 grams of crack cocaine in the apartment, along with a couple ounces of marijuana, drug packaging <b>...</b>

Its pretty slow going as the linespeed along here is 50mph until we reach the great eastern main line at Witham.

Braintree: Beckwith Hydraulic Mall Freight Elevator (PEELLE Doors & Gate) @ South Shore Plaza
We ride a Beckwith Hydraulic Freight Elevator, which serves the Loading Dock (Basement), and 1'st floor of the mall, in a PUBLIC restroom corridor, at the South Shore Plaza, Brintree, Massachusetts. I found it odd it's in a public location, and the best part is, nothing stating it's off-limits! What I did NOT know about the elevator, until I used it was: (1) The elevator does NOT serve the 2'nd floor of the mall. (2) UP and DOWN button meant floors, not "Dead Man's" Controls. (Related to #1) The ride is fairly smooth, unless you move about, then it gets a little bumpy, and make noise. Neither being all that bad. It's a slow ride, but that's a good thing when capturing travel. There's no leveling speed, or Pre-Door, that I noticed.
