Irena Szewinska vs. Marita Koch-400m.1977 World Cup,Dusseldorf.

The amazing Szewinkska's crown was about to pass to the equally amazing rising star Koch, but not on this day! In a great race the Pole dug in and showed why she is still held in such high esteem.

1976 Montreal Olympic Games, Athletics, Men and Women (28.07.1976)

28.07.1976 Montreal Olympic Games, Athletics, Men and Women. Great history of sport. Soviet comment. Results - www.sports-reference.com and www.todor66.com The 1976 Olympics were hampered by a boycott by African nations, in response to the New Zealand rugby team having recent toured South Africa. Though it was argued that rugby was not an Olympic sport, it failed to satisfy African sports leaders. The biggest loss in the competition from the boycott came in the 1500 metres where Tanzania's Filbert Bayi was co-favorite with New Zealander John Walker. But their great battle never materialized and Walker won the gold medal relatively easily. In the 400 hurdles, the defending champion was Uganda's John Akii-Bua who was in top form. His competition was to come from an American newcomer, Edwin Moses, who won the gold medal and would eventually become the greatest ever at that discipline. But sadly these two great athletes never met on the track. Three athletes won doubles in 1976: Cuba's Alberto Juantorena became the first ever to win the 400/800 (save 1906); Lasse Virén again won the 5000/10000 distance races; and the Soviets Tatyana Kazankina won the 800 and 1500 metres for women. There were numerous world records set on the Montréal track -- Moses in the 400H, Anders Gärderud (SWE) in the steeplechase, Miklós Németh (HUN) in the javelin, Bruce Jenner (USA) in the decathlon, Annegret Richter (GDR) in the 100, Irena Szewińska (POL) in the 400, and the women's 4x400 by a GDR team.

1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, Athletics, Men and Women (review)

14-21.10.1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, Athletics, Men and Women (review). Great history of sport. Russian comment. Results - www.sports-reference.com The 1964 Olympics were awarded to Tokyo, Japan, which hoped to use the Games as a coming out party to show the world it had recovered from World War II. The Japanese spent lavishly on the Games, with per capita costs per athlete higher than any Games before or since, measured in constant dollars. Signifying where they had been, the final torch bearer was a Japanese runner, Yoshinori Sakai, who had been born in Hiroshima on the day the atomic bomb immolated that city. The star of the Games on the track was Peter Snell, the New Zealand middle distance runner. He had won the 800 metres in 1960 in something of an upset, but was by 1964 the best miler in the world. He chose to run both the 800 and 1500 and won both races rather comfortably. The other double winner was Soviet Tamara Press in the shot put and discus. There were several repeat winners, in addition to Snell in the 800. Al Oerter won his third consecutive discus gold medal, despite being injured and competing in pain. Józef Szmidt (POL) defended his triple jump title, and Abebe Bikila (ETH) again won the marathon. Australian Betty Cuthbert had won the 100 and 200 in Melbourne in 1956. She was back and moved up a bit to win the 400 metres, contested by women for the first time. She narrowly defeated Britain's Ann Packer, who moved up to the 800 and won in world record time ...

HELSINKI 1952 200m women (MARIJORIE JACKSON) (Amateur footage)

Marjorie Jackson was born in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, and first gained fame when she defeated reigning Olympic 100 and 200 metres champion Fanny Blankers-Koen a number of times in 1949, thus earning the nickname "the Lithgow Flash", after the New South Wales town of Lithgow where she lived and had grown up. Having won four titles at the 1950 British Empire Games, Jackson came as a favourite to the Helsinki 1952 Summer Olympics. She won both the 100 m, in a then-World-Record-equalling time of 11.5, and the 200 m, winning the first Olympic athletics titles for Australia since Edwin Flack in 1896. Having more strong runners in the team, the Australian 4 x 100 m relay team was also a favourite for the gold, but a faulty exchange meant Jackson's chances for third gold medal were gone. The Americans, anchored by Catherine Hardy (later Lavender), won in an upset, setting a new world record time of 45.9 seconds. Later in 1952, Jackson lowered the 100m World Record time to 11.4, running this new record in a meet at Gifu, Japan on 4 October 1952. In 1953 Jackson married Olympic cyclist Peter Nelson. After his death from leukaemia in 1977, she launched the Peter Nelson Leukaemia Research Fellowship Marjorie Jackson-Nelson was one of the eight flag-bearers of the Olympic Flag at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. In late 2001, Marjorie Jackson-Nelson was appointed Governor of South Australia. She relinquished office on 31 July 2007. On 15 March 2006 ...
