Gary Karr presented a Master Class at Edinburg High School, Edinburg, Texas (3-9-87), in which at least 5 bass students from Edinburg and McAllen performed and received constructive guidance and much praise from one of the great names in the classical bass world. Kurt Roehm, EHS Orchestra Director (1975-2000) was hosting the event. The VSO (Carl Seale, Director)and the Valley Symphony Asociation sponsored the master class in conjunction with Mr. Karr's performance with the VSO.

This is THE ONLY recording of this fantastic solo piece that I have seen anywhere. This is my favorite of all the Carmen Fantasies that I have heard, including the Sarasate, Waxman, and Proto Fantasies. This recording is with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra as accompaniment. Stuart Sankey was a famous teacher at the Juilliard School, Indiana University, and Aspen Music Festival. He was commissioned to write this piece by one of his most famous students, Gary Karr as a bass counterpart for the Sarasate Fantasy. Gary Karr is a double bassist from Los Angeles who was born in 1941. He was discovered after a broadcast of Leonard Bernstein and the NYPO of Saint-Saens' "The Carnival of the Animals" where he performed the solo on "The Swan," a piece originally written for cello. He was approached by a record label to record his first record which lead to the inspiration of an entire generation of bass players and his ability to make a living as a soloist alone.
