We decided to take a day trip down to the southernmost point in mainland United States, Key West. The drive takes you along Highway 1 Overseas Highway and passes through some 40+ islands before reaching Key West. Journey time from Miami to Key West is approximately 4 hours, but you pass through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. The Overseas Highway is a single lane Highway which passes over on one side, the Atlantic Ocean and on the other side, the Gulf of Mexico. You basically cross from Mainland Florida and into the Caribbean without flying and the transition happens within minutes of starting the journey over the Overseas Highway. You see the sea turn all different shades of blue and all the way to an emerald colour. This is the full journey from the Florida Turnpike all the way to Duval Street in the centre of Key West. Some scenes of my visit to Key West. There is a lot more to Key West than just what is in this video. I have more footage and will make additional montages. This video just has some important places I visited. First is the Caribbean House, the quest house I stayed at on Petronia Street in Bahama Village. The owners and hosts are Michel and Marie and you couldn't find a nicer couple to stay with on the island, Merci. Just down the street from the Caribbean House is Blue Heaven where Ernest Hemingway participated in boxing matches when it was a saloon and bordello. Today it has a great restaurant and bar, I loved their omelets. I also took the "Wind and Wine" sunset cruise on the 65 foot Skipjack Sarah with Danger Charters and had an awesome time. I spent a perfect evening, a full moon no less, with some great people! You can watch the complete sunset from the Sarah and the full moon from the Caribbean House which I have also posted. We found Key West to be the closest thing to the Caribbean without leaving the US. The weather was great (although very hot in August), lots of history, pirate stories,haunted locations,great museums & art galleries, reasonably-priced restaurants,entertainment & of course, great sunsets! I Most of the entertainment options were geared toward adults so I wouldn't recommend it so much for families with small children. My wife & I really loved it and it's a great place to just "chill out".

This is a sample of my Hurricane Rita storm chase video. The footage was taken as Rita moved westward through the Florida Straits, passing about 40 miles south of Key West. Peak winds, towards the middle of this clip, are near 75mph with gusts near 100mph. By the end of the clip, storm surge has risen to about 2 feet over South Roosevelt Blvd., along the southeastern tip of the island.

Only four days after going through Hurricane Georges in Puerto Rico, I was able to intercept the storm a second time in the lower Florida Keys. From September 22-24, Georges made landfall in the Dominican Republic, crossed into Haiti, emerged over the Windward passage and then made landfall in Eastern Cuba. The hurricane moved west-northwest skirting the northern coast of Cuba for a day, before emerging into the Florida Straits on the 24th. Georges began strengthening as it approached the Florida Keys, passing directly over Key West as a Category Two, with sustained winds of 105mph and gusts to 125mph. The minimum central pressure reported at landfall in Key West was 981mb (28.97in). I was accompanied on this chase by fellow storm chaser Jim Edds.

Recorded December 25, 2005. Video begins in the Atlanta Airport as I wait for my flight to Key West. After a short segment from the plane as we land in Key West the video shifts to the streets of Key West. First we see my hotel, the Casa Marina Resort along the Gulf of Mexico followed by the monument that marks the southern most point in the continental United States. There are views from the top of the Key West Lighthouse before I head out of town on US 1 through the Florida Keys. KEY WEST, Florida Keys -- Thousands of celebrants in balmy Key West welcomed 2012 with the "drop" of a renowned female impersonator perched in a super-sized red high heel. The annual "drag queen drop" was an offbeat warm-weather take-off on the traditional New Year's Eve "ball drop" in New York's Times Square. Lavishly gowned drag queen Sushi ruled festivities at the Bourbon Street Pub complex -- seated in a ruby slipper suspended high above spectators on the island city's famed Duval Street. Seconds before midnight, the red heel carrying Sushi was lowered from the complex's balcony toward the crowd below. At the stroke of midnight, she popped the cork on a ceremonial bottle of champagne to welcome 2012. The "drag queen drop" wasn't the only unique New Year's Eve celebration in Key West. On lower Duval Street, crowds watched the descent of a gigantic manmade conch shell, the symbol of the Florida Keys, to the flat roof of Sloppy Joe's Bar. In the island city's Historic Seaport, New Year's Eve revelry saluted the Florida Keys' seafaring heritage with the "drop" of a pirate wench from the top of a sailing ship's mast. Elsewhere in the Florida Keys, multiple fireworks displays celebrated 2012's arrival.

A 13-year project to create a new artificial reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary finally ended May 27, 2009, with the intentional sinking of the former missile-tracking ship the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg. The ship is resting on the bottom of the ocean, in 140 feet of water, about seven miles off of Key West. It only took one minute and 54 seconds for the ship to sink.

Between September 17th and 24th, 2005 Hurricane Rita, became the 17th named storm, 10th hurricane, fifth major hurricane and third Category Five hurricane of the record-shattering 2005 season. Hurricane Rita also has the distinction of producing the fourth lowest central pressure on record in the Atlantic basin, as well as the lowest pressure ever observed over the Gulf of Mexico. By September 17th an area of disturbed weather associated with the combination of a tropical wave and the remnants of a old frontal boundary, became better organized over the Atlantic, north of the Dominican Republic and east of the southern Bahamas. The system was classified Tropical Depression 18 as it moved west-northwest towards the Florida Straits. On the following day, the depression reached Tropical Storm strength and was named Rita. On the night of September 19th, intensifying Rita entered the straits south of the Florida Keys and by the morning of September 20th had reached hurricane strength. Hurricane Rita continued to strenghten as it passed south of the Keys, with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph (85 kts) and a minimum pressure near 970 mb (28.64 in) at the time of its closest approach, about 40 miles to the south of Key West, Florida. From the evening of September 19th through the evening of the 20th, storm chaser Michael Laca intercepted Hurricane Rita at Key West, Florida. At my location I encountered sustained winds near 75 mph (65 kts) with peak gusts near 95 mph (80 kts <b>...</b>

Hardware components are from Flight Deck Solutions, CPFlight, Poldragonet, SISMO, and ACE. The seats are out of a real UPS 727-100QPF. Yes, I know the yokes aren't linked and there are visible projector seams on the screen. The latter is on the "to do" list, along with about 50 other projects. Enjoy!
