Pushkar (Rajasthan) Pushkar is a town in the state of Rajasthan in India. It is situated 14 Km from Ajmer and is one of the five sacred dhams, pilgrimage sites for devout Hindus; it is often called "Tirth Raj" (the king of pilgrimage sites). In recent years it has become a popular destination for foreign tourists. Pushkar lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. It has five principle temples, many smaller temples and 52 ghats where pilgrims decend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters. One of the primary temples is the 14th century temple dedicated to Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. Very few temples to Lord Brahma exist anywhere in the world[1], so Lord Brahma's temple in Pushkar is quite rare. Pushkar is also famous for its annual Pushkar Camel Fair. The natural environment of Pushkar and the sacred lake has become increasingly degraded in the last few decades. The problems stem mainly from overdevelopment of tourist facilities and the deforestation of the surrounding area [2] Please note that Pushkar, the pilgrim centre, should not be confused with Budha Pushkar (Old Pushkar), a town nearby. Budha Pushkar is famous for it's rose farming. Pushkar is one of the oldest places of India. The date of its actual founding is not known, but legend associates Lord Brahma with its creation. The Pushkar Camel Fair
Pushkar is a holy city that has several claims to fame. It is oriented around the Pushkar Lake where ghats (steps) rise up out of the lake's edge up to temples. There are over 400 temples in Pushkar but the most famous is the Brahman temple, unique in all of India. The medieval town is a maze of small streets and alleys packed with bazaars, cafes, and hotels. The entire town rests in a valley with temple-studded mountains. The town is famous for its Pushkar Camel Fair. It is a weeklong event that mixes the trading of an estimated 60000 camels from the numerous Rajasthani villages across the state and a religious pilgrimage where two million people come to the lake to bathe on Kartika Purnima. Every year on the full moon of Kartika, Hindus come from all over India to cleanse their sins in the lake. They descend the ghats that completely surround the lake to wash.

As a result there were not too many backpackers, and so the urchins came after us with doubled efforts. Pushkar Having spent the major part of my youth in DELHI I still cannot find words to describe this town. You have to come here and experience it. Just 11 Km from Ajmer and surrounded by hills on three sides and sand dunes on the other, an oasis in inhospitable surrounding is an absolute must-see in Rajasthan. Pushkar, is a Hindu pilgrim town and has one of the five dhams or pilgrimages that are held in high esteem by Hindus. The others are Badrinath, Puri, Rameswaram, and Dwarka. Emperor Aurangzeb destroyed many of the temples here during his progroms on the Hindus. THE PUSHKAR LAKE: (Tirtharaj, which means the Royal Pilgrimage) It is revered as one the most sacred lakes among the Hindus. The belief is that; a dip in this lake on Kartik Purnima (the full moon day of the Kartik month), and worship at the Brahma temple cleanses the soul and ensures salvation. The famed waters of the Pushkar Lake are said to wash away the sins of a lifetime. The mystical water is also believed to cure skin diseases. There are many temples located around the lake that add to the charm and mystique of this sacred town. JAGATPITA SHRI BRAHMA MANDIR: (Lord of the Universe) This is the only Temple dedicated to Lord Bhrama in World. The temple stands on a high plinth with a striking red sandstone spire (shiker), marble steps leading up to it the temple. We met this wonderful family of musicians through our new friend, Jesus from Spain. After spending the last two years traveling India to capture the stories of 100 Indian families (www.100familiasindias.com), he met the Bhopas in Pushkar and decided to help them procure the funding to replace their much needed new tent for the coming winter. For a donation he, and they, offered us this private show in a tea shop tent outside of the campgrounds at this year's Pushkar (Camel) Fair. What a treat!
