MOV clips are big! I am used to using my Windows "Movie Maker" which saves clips as WMV's but WMM won't read MOV's so I am on the lookout for new, reasonably priced, video editing software. I have tried various file conversions for 2 days now but there are problems of one type or another with all the conversion utilities (noise and poor quality in the audio, stuttering on zoom and panning clips, inability of the converted clip to load into Windows Movie Maker, etc.

There appears to be a fault in this unit. The speaker emits a constant noise that is picked up by the left hand mic. It will be going back to the shop today, and I hope I can get one that works. the video and audio quality is otherwise excellent.

A tradition of the Newark School of Violin Making (based at Newark College here in the UK) is to have teams of four students competing against each other at the end of term, to make an instrument (a violin in white usually or a guitar), in just 24 hours. This is divided into three 8 hour days. Two former students, Steffi and Joerg Koplin decided to get together with two friends and attempt to make a viola in just 24 hours. They were not competing against any other team, but against time itself. Obviously, this is not the way an instrument would normally be crafted! Shot using a Canon SX130IS (so, not even a dedicated camcorder), with additional stills using a Ricoh CX1.

This turned out to be more of a test of Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 video editing software. I have a new camera (Canon SX130 IS), which saves video clips as MOV files. I have been using Windows Movie Maker with AVI video clips for 2 years now. Windows Movie Maker will not import MOV files so I am looking for new software that will accept MOV files. I would rather not do file conversions as that is just another time consuming step in the process and image quality is usually degraded with file conversions. I tried Adobe Premier Elements 8 but it is so CPU intensive that it took forever to get anything done. It also did not like my video card, which made for unusable video preview. My PC is a 2.4ghz AMD w/ 3gb of memory. The Adobe software was also somewhat difficult to use and I just did not like the feel of it. I had no such problems with CyberLink PowerDirector 8. It ran smoothly and efficiently. It operates very similar to Windows Movie Maker (drag and drop) so I was able to jump right on it and it has a lot of additional features and tools that WMM doesn't have. One of which is a wind noise filter, which I used right off with these clips. Also note that the stills at the beginning are a mix of wide screen and standard format. I did not have to change anything in the video editor to mix these images. I saved my project, exited and restarted the program several times just to be sure I could get back to my saved project file. I think I'll keep it :) Note: This clip is NOT <b>...</b>

This concert (which I accompanied my iCarly-fan-son to) was an ideal time to test my new digital camera (my old one was was really, really, really oooollllllddddd. Ancient. Broken.) Anyway, considering this was less than $200, it's a great camera! I was standing at the back of this huge theater and I was still able to get "close" photos. I would say I was a good 80 ft from the stage, if not more. It's able to take photos in the dark without the use of a flash. The 12x zoom (guaranteed clarity) is awesome, but it's possible to zoom up to 30x (although it's grainy and blurry most of the time at that point). Capturing videos is easy with one click of the button, and you can zoom in as well with the camera recording (although extremely slowly). The only downside it seems, just as with other reviews, is that you have to wait a few seconds between shots (for photos). No speed shutters here, but unless you're a sports photographer or photograph your active kids all the time, this camera is very adequate. Great, in fact. I'd recommend it to friends and family.

Video ends suddently because camera ate batteries included in package. I had been using it for 2 days, recorded about 10mins of HD video. I guess, I should buy a rechargeable battery set.
