The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel (yep, that's its official name) is the first diesel-powered new car to be certified for sale across the entire US — including California and the four states that piggyback their emissions regulations on the Golden State since they all turned up their tailpipe-sniffing noses at everyone else in 2006. So it was probably no mere coincidence that Volkswagen chose Santa Monica, California, as the site for the introduction of the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI. And as we later tested the Jetta TDI near our Santa Monica office by driving the Pacific Coast Highway and the canyon roads of Malibu, we were happy to flaunt this turbodiesel's new clean-and-green status in the backyard of so many Prius-driving members of the celebrity set.

The vehicle is the first second-generation diesel-powered racing sports car and features numerous technical innovations with which Audi is set to demonstrate Vorsprung durch Technik yet again. BMW X5 M is powered by a tuned up 4.4 liter V8 M engine delivering 555 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1500 to 5650 rpm. The M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine is matted to a 6-Speed Steptronic automatic transmission that offers three driving modes: Normal (D), Sport (S), and M-Sport. Top speed is limited to 155 mph and runs 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds The Audi Q7 V12 TDI was developed by Audis Quattro GmbH high-performance division, and Audi even considered officially dubbing it an RS model. This 6.0-liter V-12 is completely new, but it shares components with Audis family of V-6, V-8, and V-10 engines. It produces 500 horsepower and 758 pound-feet of torque (1000 Nm). The crossover is capable of hitting 62 mph in 5.5 seconds, with a limited top speed of 155 mph. Maximum torque is available from just 1750 rpm. Range Rover, as Clarkson says, is heavier and slower than the German rivals. Were not sure if hes comparing the ride quality or the performance, but Top Gear refers the Rover as being the most comfortable from the group. It is powered by a 5.0 liter supercharged V8 with 510 horsepower and 461 lb/ft torque. 0-60mph in 5.9 sec.

TDI Power!!!! Fast? Hell no! Fun? Absolutely! A 105 hp TDI VW Golf V diesel with 3 adults on board taking a lap on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. This was back in October of 2004. I think it was about the 3rd time I'd driven the track. Since then I've broken into the 8 minute range driving "proper" cars. Other than the obvious power deficit, the car was enjoyable to drive for a FWD econobox. The brakes were plenty up to the task (got a little fade at the very end) and the handling was fairly neutral.
