Christian Marclay's "Telephones" (1995), a 7 1/2-minute compilation of brief Hollywood film clips that creates a narrative of its own. These linked-together snippets of scenes involve innumerable well-known actors such as Cary Grant, Tippi Hedren, Ray Milland, Humphrey Bogart and Meg Ryan, who dial, pick up the receiver, converse, react, say good-bye and hang up. In doing so, they express a multitude of emotions--surprise, desire, anger, disbelief, excitement, boredom--ultimately leaving the impression that they are all part of one big conversation. The piece moves easily back and forth in time, as well as between color and black-and-white, aided by Marclay's whimsical notions of continuity.

Inventoon 1 - The Telephone
In 2003, I was fresh out of audio engineering school and running my own multimedia business after working for several years at a studio as both a recording engineer and graphic designer. Aside from a few 'just for fun' stop motion videos and flip books as a kid, I had never done any animation, although I was a huge fan of it. In my town of Bloomington, Indiana, there was a TV show for kids on the local PBS station called The Friday Zone. On a whim one day, I contacted the station and asked if I could do cartoons for them. They were hesitant, but interested. This first inventoon is the result. It was the pilot. I used a combination of Flash and Sony Vegas. At the time, Flash video was not the nice, easily streamable thing it is today. I still prefer to do audio mixing in Vegas. When the folks at WTIU saw this video, they told me that they were expecting something like a cheap slideshow but they didn't expect something so Monty Python-like. They immediately commissioned 9 more episodes. As far as I know, they were all broadcast on The Friday Zone although I admit I have never seen an episode. They have not been seen since and the show is under totally different management if it even exists at all anymore. The story continues at Inventoon 2.

Electric Light Orchestra - Telephone Line (1977)
A classic song from ELO, one that I loved from the first time I heard it. With pics of telephones and people. I tried to find some famous people (there's not that many), the ones I came up with include Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Paul Mcartney, Whoopi Goldberg.. there are a few of Lady Gaga and Beyonce.. and they really emphasize the huge difference between old and new times. When I was making this video it seemed like I was walking through history.. as the telephone has changed so much over the years. Now with things gone wireless, computers and smart phones, its almost become a thing of the past. In some places there are no longer pay phones.. due to vandalism and the use of cellular phones. The handheld phone & telephone poles seem almost like dinosaurs.. but an important part in the history of communication :) Any ways, there are many styles of phones in the video.. and although I started out making what I thought would be something fun, it was more thought provoking about the times we are living in... and how things are changing rapidly. Whatever you get out of it, hope you enjoy it. This is not my usual style of video really.. and there are many great live performances of this song on youtube.. and this being with Sony, maybe some countries won't be able to view it anyways...
