A Nation Within a Nation: Jaramogi Abebe Agyeman Explains 'Black' Self-Determination
Interview with Jaramogi Abebe Agyeman, founder of the Shrines of the Black Madonna of the Pan African Orthodox Christian church (PAOCC) and father of the modern "black" theology movement, late December 1967/early January 1968. ST. MARK'S TO PAOCC A mesmerizing orator, brilliant organizer and innovative thinker, Agyeman, born Albert B. Cleage, Jr., founded his socially active church on March 19, 1953, after he and 300 supporters left the moderate St. Mark's Community church, United Presbyterian, Detroit, to form St. Mark's Community church, separate from the Presbyterian denomination. In November 1954, the breakaway St. Mark's joined the Congregational Association, becoming Central Congregational. In October or November 1965, it became Central United Church of Christ in line with the new denomination formed by the union of the Congregational Christian and Evangelical and Reformed churches in 1957. Central soon became a center of black nationalist activity, locally and nationally. On Easter Sunday, March 26, 1967, Agyeman unveiled a striking 18-by-nine-foot chancel mural of a Black Madonna and child by Glanton Dowdell (00:55) and proclaimed the Black Christian Nationalist Movement (BCN), "recapturing the historic Black Messiah" and "undertaking today to rebuild the disunited Black Nation just as Jesus did 2000 years ago." Akua Akyaa Agyeman is a Ghanaian-American born and raised in Chicago to Ghanaian parents, Bennett and Betty Agyeman. She was raised, along with three older siblings, deeply rooted in the Ghanaian community in Chicago, which has strongly impacted her. Her value systems, educational endeavors, and what she believes to be her life's work is linked to and guided by her identity as a Ghanaian woman in America. Akua Agyeman was crowned Miss Ghana-USA 2011 on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the Pageant held at the Eisemann Performance Center, Richardson, TX. She gave a spectacular and classy performance while representing the Western Region of Ghana.
