The Roman Architecture

The Architecture of Ancient Rome adopted the external Greek architecture for their own purposes, which were so different from Greek buildings as to create a new architectural style. The two styles are often considered one body of classical architecture. This approach is considered reproductive, and sometimes it hinders scholars' understanding and ability to judge Roman buildings by Greek standards, particularly when relying solely on external appearances. The Romans absorbed Greek influence, apparent in many aspects closely related to architecture; for example, this can be seen in the introduction and use of the Triclinium in Roman villas as a place and manner of dining. The Romans, similarly, were indebted to their Etruscan neighbors and forefathers who supplied them with a wealth of knowledge essential for future architectural solutions, such as hydraulics and in the construction of arches. Social elements such as wealth and high population densities in cities forced the ancient Romans to discover new (architectural) solutions of their own. The use of vaults and arches together with a sound knowledge of building materials, for example, enabled them to achieve unprecedented successes in the construction of imposing structures for public use. Examples include the aqueducts of Rome, the Baths of Diocletian and the Baths of Caracalla, the basilicas and perhaps most famously of all, the Colosseum. They were reproduced at smaller scale in most important towns and cities in ...

UNLV Landscape Architecture Design/Build Project

During the beginning of our 3rd year, we had to design and build an itinerate patio in about a week. One large constraint was that we were not allowed to break the ground plane (no digging). The video takes you through the three design concepts, our ultimate design, and the finished project.

Modern Architecture Luxury Villa 'MAHINA'

VIPS are delighted to introduce you to 'Mahina' 'Mahina' is from a new generation of visionary architecture... works of art you can live in. VIPS only associate with the very top echelons of exclusivity Please contact us if you would like more information on commissioning one of these astounding and iconic works of art for your property portfolio. stephenrumney@hotmail.com TECHNICAL INFO: • Mahina uses Diamante glass. This glass has a very low iron content and does not have the usual green tint of a standard glass. The glazing is structural and is mostly 32mm thick. Many of the panels can move, for example the master bedroom façade can slide and stack on both sides for 10m. • The complete façade has two sets of blinds, one set of shade blinds and one set of block out. These are remote controlled and can make any room or area private. The blinds neatly roll up into the ceiling spaces meaning they cannot be seen when not in use. • The whole building has been designed to sustainable principles. The house has a very high available thermal mass and the temperature is regulated by water cooling/heating in the floors and walls (arches). Warm water collected from warm days is stored for the evenings and cooler days. This system combined with geothermal heat exchangers allows for well regulated temperatures with low external energy input. • A natural ventilation system deals with the high thermal gains the house receives during the day. This includes underground wet rock cooling ...

FIRST EARTH (1/12) - Uncompromising Ecological Architecture

Chapter 1 What's Wrong With Architecture FIRST EARTH is a documentary about the movement towards a massive paradigm shift for shelter -- building healthy houses in the old ways, out of the very earth itself, and living together like in the old days, by recreating villages. An audiovisual manifesto filmed over the course of 4 years and 4 continents, FIRST EARTH makes the case that earthen homes are the healthiest housing in the world; and that since it still takes a village to raise a healthy child, it is incumbent upon us to transform our suburban sprawl into eco-villages, a new North American dream. Architecture In Helsinki - The owls go

This is a music video of Architecture In Helsinki's The Owls Go. I chose to do a video of this song first of all because I like their music, but also because the videos I had seen of their music were all very different and abstract, which I liked. I was inspired to do my own video of one of their songs that did not yet have a video. The rhythm of The Owls Go caught my attention. It has a lot of instruments that I hadn't heard before. When I listened to this song it made me remember the carefree joys of my childhood. Now that I am grown up I have so many responsibilities and feel weighted down. And so that's why I chose this song. The lyrics of this song are very ambiguous; listeners can interpret them in different ways depending on their experience. Although the song touches on heartbreak, the sound of it evokes the simplicity of childhood. I experimented a lot making this music video; I used different techniques such as paper cut, stop motion animation and frame by frame drawing. Finally, I worked in Illustration program to add different textures to the characters and background. I played around with the characters, the rhythm and sound to reflect the feeling of the music, the sound of 'bubbles', the happiness of childhood. This video was my undergraduate thesis project. I completed it in four months using Adobe After Effect and Adobe Illustration programs. It won The Outstanding Student of the Year Award2009 from the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, Birmingham ...

Art Nouveau Architecture (1 of 2)

***By request from Laura (lamartineta)*** Art Nouveau is an international movement and style of art, architecture and applied art, especially the decorative arts that peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890-1905). The name 'Art nouveau' is French for 'new art'. It is also known as Jugendstil, German for 'youth style', named after the magazine Jugend, which promoted it, and in Italy, Stile Liberty from the department store in London, Liberty & Co., which popularized the style. A reaction to academic art of the 19th century, it is characterized by organic, especially floral and other plant-inspired motifs, as well as highly-stylized, flowing curvilinear forms. Art Nouveau is an approach to design according to which artists should work on everything from architecture to furniture, making art part of everyday life. Art Nouveau buildings often have asymmetrical shapes, arches and decorative surfaces with curved, plant-like designs. en.wikipedia.org
