Part of ongoing TrebleFive Records series of projects called "In the Field", showcasing artists and music culture recorded in our travels across the globe, we present "Bembé Asaó: music of Los Sitios". Filmed in the barrio of Los Sitios in Havana, Cuba, this short film introduces the afrocuban ensemble Bembé Asaó through footage taken over a two-day field recording session with the group. The Bembé style as it is known today originated in eastern Cuba, but its true origins are African. Bembé is described as "monte" (roughly translating as "out there") a term that defines nature in its broadest form - the wilderness, mountains, forests - and celebrates the link between nature and humankind. It is also the music of ritual, with different songs dedicated to particular saints or to the calling or appeasing of spirits. The video is about a ritual taking place in a private house in Trinidad where you can notice trance possesion phenomenon and the meaningful performative power of the ritual.
