The major problem facing Africa is corruption and control of resources. In the DRC, the military is stealing minerals to sell to Western companies. At a remote mine in central DRC, workers with torches and pick axes hack at the ruddy earth. They are mining cassiterite, a mineral vital in the production of laptops and mobile phones. But dispersed among the miners are Congolese Government troops -- in plain clothes for the camera -- literally forcing most workers to work at gunpoint. 'The soldiers always steal everything. They even come to shoot people down the mineshafts,' complains Regina Maponda. Western greed for cassiterite is fuelling the boom -- at an airfield near the mine, soldiers jealously guard their loot as it makes it way to Japan and the West. Congo is a 1995 action film, based on the novel of the same name by Michael Crichton. It was directed by Frank Marshall and stars Laura Linney, Dylan Walsh, Tim Curry, Ernie Hudson, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Grant Heslov, Joe Don Baker and Bruce Campbell. The film was released on June 9, 1995. The film begins with TraviCom employee Charles Travis (Campbell), the ex-fiancé of Dr. Karen Ross (Linney), testing a laser gun in a remote part of the Congo. Charles' friend goes in to a cave to get his bag and is killed and mutilated offscreen. Whatever killed him throws his eyeball at Charles and lets out a roar, sounding very much like a gorilla. When Charles's crew is discovered dead and something attacks the video camera, an enraged TraviCom CEO, RB Travis (Baker) reveals that the purpose of exploring the Congo is to find the local diamond mines and expand his satellite technologies. A film well worth watching.

After spending some time in Goma, the capital of the North Kivu province, our crew piled into a Land Cruiser and rumbled toward a mining town called Numbi in South Kivu. We were told that the mines around Numbi were a good example of conflict-free mines: government-controlled, no rebels in sight. When we arrived at the mine trailed by a few local government minders, there were in fact no rebels in sight. Government troops were also nowhere to be found. No child laborers, either. In fact, there were no laborers of any kind—the place was empty. Evidently, the West's sudden concern about the money trail of the Congo's mineral trade had folks around these parts spooked.
