I cut the Simple Gifts section out of Aaron Copeland's Appalachian Spring (not meaning to desecrate a great work) but hopefully the transition doesn't sound too awkward. Please enjoy the photographs by Ansel Adams which accompany the music.

Roxi Copland- I'll be groped for Christmas (TSA Edition)

I flew to San Francisco a week ago and found myself having a disconcertingly intimate experience with the good folks at TSA. Since I'm anticipating the same overly exuberant greeting at Christmas, I thought I'd write this little ditty about it. Recorded by the brilliant Steve Capp at Capp Audio Productions.

Copland-Piano Variations/part 1

Piano Variations by Aaron Copland Performed by Robert Silverman ********************************* American composer of concert and film music, as well as an accomplished pianist. Instrumental in forging a distinctly American style of composition, he was widely known as "the dean of American composers." Copland's music achieved a difficult balance between modern music and American folk styles, and the open, slowly changing harmonies of many of his works are said to evoke the vast American landscape. He incorporated percussive orchestration, changing meter, polyrhythms, polychords and tone rows. Aside from composing, Copland taught, presented music-related lectures, wrote books and articles, and served as a conductor (generally, but not always, of his own works).

Aaron Copland - Fanfare For The Common Man

The awesome Fanfare For the Common Man by Aaron Copland. This fanfare was written on request from Eugene Goossens, conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, in response to the US entry into the Second World War. During the First World War, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra had asked British composers for a fanfare to begin each orchestral concert. It had been so successful that he thought to repeat the procedure in World War II with American composers. Goossens suggested titles like Fanfare for Soldiers, but Copland gave it the much better title Fanfare for the Common Man. The piece was premiered 12 March 1943 at income tax time, as a homage to the common man. Even though it is american, I think it should be the "official" fanfare for alle the common people in the world. Kind of like they did the moonlanding for all mankind. This is just my personal opinion, and I mean no offence to americans for wanting to "steal" this one. Music Copyrights owned by Sony Music Entertainment.

Aaron Copland - Inscape (1/2)

Aaron Copland (1900-1990) Inscape (1967) for orchestra [Inscape] was commisioned by the NYPO in celebration of their 125th anniversary and first performed under the direction of Leonard Bernstein at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor on 13 September 1967. Like Copland's previous orchestral work Connotations of 1962, Inscape continues his very personal exploration of serial writing. While rejecting the Schoenbergian aesthetic, Copland has become increasingly intrigued by the Schoenbergian method. As he says in his autobiographical essay 'Composer from Brooklyn', 'I found twelve-tone writing to be especially liberating in two respects; it forces the tonal composer to unconventionalize his thinking with respect to chordal structure, and it tends to freshen his melodic and figurational imagination'. His interpretation of the serial principle is neither dogmatic nor hieratic, but creates and atmosphere in which each of the twelve notes preserves its own individuality and integrity, without, however, being entirely absolved from a certain responsibility towards tonality. Through the single, closely-knit movement of Inscape there is no perceptible contradiction between the serial and diatonic elements, rather they dissolve freely into each other to produce music of stimulating indipendence of spirit. ~ Robert Henderson New York Philharmonic Orchestra/Leonard Bernstein Painting: "Forecast" (2009) by France De Francesca
