Vintage PBh - Coral Reefs

One of the most amazing habitats on earth is found in warm, clear, shallow waters of tropical oceans worldwide. Tiny cup-shaped animals, called polyps, live in colonies, and when they die, their skeletons form a hard, stony, branching structure made of limestone. In our first episode we examine coral -- the growing, living, incredible, under-the-sea structures that provide shelter and food for many marine animals.

The Coral - Butterfly House

From the album 'Butterfly House' released on 12th July 2010. Lyrics: Inside the Butterfly House The wind blows in From the pier The Punch and Judy stand Before you, then it disappears I dim the lights And tell your fortune We'll be there soon In the Butterfly House Back to the sea A ship comes in To a half moon town Hear the towers fall And watch dreamland Burn to the ground I dim the lights And tell your fortune We'll be there soon In the Butterfly House Long ago When the music played From the steeple To the bay Time went by In the warm summer sky As we walked Free of loneliness and doubt In the Butterfly House

In Search Of... The Castle Of Secrets (Coral Castle) Part 1

In Search Of... "The Castle of Secrets" hosted by Leonard Nimoy, Episode #112, Season 5. Part 1 of 3 Coral Castle in Homestead, Florida, is one of the most amazing structures ever built. In terms of accomplishment, it's been compared to Stonehenge, ancient Greek temples, and even the great pyramids of Egypt. It is amazing -- some even say miraculous -- because it was quarried, fashioned, transported, and constructed by one man: Edward Leedskalnin, a 5-ft. tall, 100-lb. Latvian immigrant.

Coral bleaching

Coral bleaching occurs when corals get too hot. Bleached corals are essentially sick corals and although they can recover, if temperatures are too warm for too long, the corals will die. Coral bleaching and in some cases death, is an impact of climate change.

Coral Gardening in Fiji

Dedicated coral gardeners are doing their part to restore the declining reefs in Fiji. Watch as these men and women propagate corals and then re-seed the wild reefs in an effort to restore them to their former glory. (Note the vibrant colors and rapid growth!) This is a pilot project currently underway, that is being highlighted by BBC in the documentary series South pacific. The film was made under the guidance of Jonathan Clay who was grateful enough to share this clip to the world.

The Value of Coral

"Sadly, coral does not have the same value as diamonds; actually the coral does not have a lot of value at all". Coral grows, you can cultivate it and just like a diamond, it's rare. One percent of the world oceans is covered by reef, reef is considered endangered but still not valuable. 99% of Bonaire's shoreline is covered by Coral. Coral reefs are the largest structures created by any group of animals in the world. If our shorelines where made out of gemstone, then there would be an army of police force protecting these corals to make sure nobody would ever touch or takes any species. Nobody would be allowed to disturb its health or it's growth. Bonaire then would be the safest place on earth. But still it seem that our reef and reef fish does not have that kind of value. Divers are braking and touching the coral to get the picture of a sea horse, shore lines are being excavated to build villas nobody can effort, cruise ships and airplanes are dumping their waste water. The funny thing about all this protection: we actually don't need permission to protect the coral. We don't need to wait for the government to send out a Zero tolerance policy. We don't need the permission of the marine park before starting protecting the coral and give it his value it so much deserves. We can start now,"don't touch, don't brake, you can only take pictures and leave footprints" If you see something, say something

Ed Leedskalnin - Secrets of Coral Castle Pt.1

Investigative journalist Joe Bullard returned to discuss the mysteries surrounding Florida's Coral Castle and its creator Ed Leedskalnin. The Castle and its gardens feature thousands of tons of coral rock that Leedskalnin, a frail man who weighed just 100 pounds, carved into artistic yet functional objects such as tables and chairs, a sundial and a huge perfectly balanced gate. While he made and moved these objects in secret, he claimed he used the same technology that the Egyptians built the pyramids with. Leedskalnin said he built Coral Castle for his lost love Agnes who jilted him back in Latvia, but Bullard suggested that this tale might have been a cleverly disguised cover story for hiding his secret knowledge and scientific achievements. When Leedskalnin was in a hospital in 1951, shortly before his death, thieves stole some of his tools. Bullard believes this might have been a planned confiscation. Leedskalnin left a message over his bedroom at the site: THE SECRET OF THE UNIVERSE IS 7129/6105195. One caller said that was the number from Leedskalnin's federal application for citizenship; another caller related the number to the "golden ratio." Bullard's book Waiting for Agnes, a fictionalized account of the Coral Castle story, incorporates the lore of Atlantis and the Bermuda Triangle into the plot. Joe Bullard was born in Florida in 1951. He attended the University of West Florida and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Journalism in 1974. He found out about the ...
