Powerful cyclone Yasi hits Queensland in Australia
Australian authorities have warned people to take shelter with a powerful cyclone expected to hit the northern state of Queensland shortly. Winds have already begun to pick up and people are being told to stay off the streets. Cyclone Yasi, which has strengthened to a category 5, is feared to be the most dangerous storm to ever hit the area. This is yet another chapter in Australia's trying summer, during which it witnessed the worst flooding in decades.

Meteorology Tutorial: Cyclones and Anticyclones
Anticyclones are basically the opposite of cyclones (Greek prefix, anti, means opposite). Cyclones are areas of surface convergence and upper level divergence, and since anticyclones are the exact opposite, anticyclones are areas of surface divergence and upper level convergence. A cyclone is formed as a result of expanding, rising, and unstable air caused by heating. However as volume increases, the temperature decreases. According to Charles law, at a constant pressure, volume varies directly with absolute temperature. But still, why is it that when the volume increases, the expanding airs temperature decreases. According to the Kinetic theory, gas molecules are in constant random motion, and thus move hither and thither. Now in most cases, heat is energy, and when heat is added into a reaction, it often acts as a catalyst. Hence, the gas molecules move faster and take up more space as they move at higher velocities, increasing the volume. So now one liter of the air parcel would now occupy more space than it did previously. Moreover as the gas molecules move faster, they interact and bounce off each other more. As they bounce off each other, they transport some of that energy to each other, but some of that energy is also released in to the ambient air (Latent heat), causing a loss of energy. It is in a sense, semi-nuclear fusion phenomena. They then become cooler as they lose energy, and if the air contains ample water vapor, it would actually condense into clouds <b>...</b>

The roller coaster was completely rehabilitated and opened to enthusiastic crowds on July 1, 1975. Since that time, Astroland Park and the Albert family has invested millions of dollars in the upkeep of the Cyclone. Since Astroland closed in 2008, Carol Hill Albert, president of Cyclone Coasters, continues to operate the Cyclone under a lease agreement with the City. The Cyclone was declared a New York City landmark on July 12, 1988, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 26, 1991. Latest updates can be found here - http Premier Anna Bligh says the cyclone bearing down on the Queensland coast has the potential to be the biggest the state has ever seen. Ms Bligh is calling on Queenslanders to prepare for gale-force winds, torrential rain and massive storm surges when Cyclone Yasi crosses the coast on Wednesday night. Residents in low-lying parts of Townsville, between Mackay and Innisfail, are already being told to evacuate and move to higher ground. Authorities fear the massive cyclone, which could pack winds up to 260 kilometres per hour, may be as intense as Cyclone Larry, which devastated parts of far north Queensland in 2006.
