Lifts at Dartford shopping center

These lifts have induction motors. Induction motors work of 3 phase AC electricity. The motor has 6 electro magnets connected to the different phases. So as AC electricity keeps changing between positive and negative - the magnets change, and as the 3 phases are in sinc - this create a rotating magnetic field. Simply connecting this sort of motor to the mains (50 htz) is rather basic and limit the motors speed as the speed of the rotating magnetic field is dependant on the frequency of the electricity. but simply putting a fast frequency into the motor won't work as the magnetic field will be so wizing it won't have much pull on the motor from a standing start. So to make these motors work at there best the frequency needs to be changed as the motor speeds up. modern day lifts have Variable frequency generators that can generate any frequency (but these don't make nice sounds) Variable frequency generators were not invented when these lifts were built so these lifts have set frequency generators which can create 2 set frequencys. When the lift speeds up it starts at the lower frequency and when it gets to a certain speed it changes to a faster frequency. which you can hear. (sounds far better than boring variable frequency) Networker trains also do this.
