Clayton Library & Museum in Culver City, California, recently discovered an unusual book in his late mother's extraordinary collection of African-American artifacts. The small, cloth-bound book, titled Slave Songs of the United States, has a publication date of 1867 and contains a collection of 136 plantation songs. Could this be the first book of African-American spirituals ever published? HISTORY DETECTIVES host Wes Cowan visits a music historian in Los Angeles to explore the coded messages and the melodies that laid the foundation of modern blues, gospel and protest songs of future generations. He also meets with Washington, DC's Howard University Choir for a special concert of selections from Slave Songs sung in the traditional style of mid-1800s spirituals. Exploring historical objects and the stories behind them, HISTORY DETECTIVES crisscrosses the country, delving into legends, folklore and personal histories to discover potentially extraordinary objects in everyday American homes, cities and small towns. The Pigeon Detectives - This is An Emergency
The Pigeon Detectives are an English band from Rothwell, Leeds, who formed in 2002. They have been championed by such well known DJs as Steve Lamacq and Jo Whiley, and performed at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in 2006, where they were tagged "the band most likely to leap to the main stage in 2007 in an NME review. They supported Dirty Pretty Things whilst they toured in spring 2006. In early November 2006 they supported fellow Leeds band Kaiser Chiefs, who are known to be fans of the band, on a number of occasions around Europe. On 8 July 2007, they played on the Radio 1 NME Stage in front of thousands at T in the Park. The performance was televised and shown later that day on BBC3. They went on to perform their biggest show ever at Oxegen 2008 which was beamed around Europe on MTV. A Michigan man owns a Guild brand acoustic guitar that he says once belonged to legendary African-American folksinger Josh White, who is credited with introducing black folk, gospel and blues music to a world audience in the 1940s. The contributor met White after a concert when he was a kid, and the guitar reminds him of a confidence White had shared with him: the Guild Company was talking to White about making a signature guitar built to his specifications and marketed under his name. If this is the guitar White had spoken of, it would be the first signature guitar ever created for an African-American musician in the United States. Detective Murders Rival! Police Cover Up Crime 23 Years Ago!
Police Brutality: LAPD detective Stephanie Lazarus has been charged with the murder of Sherri Rasmussen. The case was cold for 23 years, although the victims father, Nels Rasmussen, always suspected that Lazarus killed his daughter. At the time, Sherri Rasmussen was newly married to Lazarus ex-boyfriend, and authorities suspect it may have been a crime of passion. According to the LA Times, Nels claimed Lazarus threatened his daughter in the months before her murder, telling her If I cant have John, nobody can. On Feb. 24, 1986, Sherris husband returned to their condominium and found his wifes body on the living room floor. She was beaten badly, had several bite marks, and had been shot multiple times. The couples marriage license had also been stolen from the condo. Two men who had robbed a woman in the area at gunpoint were the lead suspects. Sherris parents offered a $10000 reward for the mens capture, but a search for the men led nowhere, and the case went cold. Back then, the LAPD were dismissive of the requests of Sherris parents to have Lazarus investigated. Fast forward to 2009 when DNA evidence can narrow down the suspects. After testing Sherris bite marks for DNA, it came back female, which then prompted detectives to obtain a DNA sample from Lazarus. Stephanie Lazarus was arrested Friday at police headquarters, and is being held without bail. Her arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday and if convicted, she could face the death penalty.
