Marka G. Stepper, viola - Dumka Rebecca Clarke - Settlement Music School

Settlement Music School Karin Fuller Capanna Faculty Recital Marka G. Stepper, viola, with Jeffrey Uhlig, piano and Nederazov The "Dumka" of Rebecca Clarke dates from 1941. This magnificent work shows the composer experimenting with a more modern leaner style but at the same time reflecting back to previous eras. There is bit of Brahms (ala the gypsy rondo of his Op. 25 Piano Quartet) at the beginning and end, and some very virtuosic writing pinned down by her English heritage. Ms. Clarke, born in Harrow, England, studied at the Royal College of Music in the early 1900's as the first female composition student of Sir Charles Stanford. She had a brilliant career as a violinist and violist. www.smsmusic.org for more information about Settlement Music School.
