Ed Wood: Glen Or Glenda? (1953) Part 1 Of 7

Ed Wood's first "major" film. IT IS TERRIBLE it's one of those movies that are so bad that they are good. It has a bizarre story, bad acting, and strange dialogue. The movie does not have the same outrageousness such as Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959) but still is hilarious. The first part of the film begins with a narrator named The Scientist (Bela Lugosi) making cryptic comments about humanity. The film proper opens with Inspector Warren finding the corpse of a male transvestite named Patrick/Patricia, who has committed suicide. Wanting to know more about cross-dressing, Warren seeks out Dr. Alton, who narrates for him the story of Glen/Glenda. However, at several points Alton appears to address the viewer rather than Inspector Warren, and the unclear role of the Scientist as narrator makes things even more confusing. Glen is shown studying women's clothes in a shop window. Dr. Alton points out that men's clothes are dull and restrictive, whereas women can adorn themselves with attractive clothing. He also makes some more bizarre statements, such as that baldness is caused by hats. Glen reads about sex change operations in a newspaper, then meets with Barbara, his girlfriend, who asks if Glen's secret problem is another women. The film then cuts to the (in)famous shot of the Scientist shouting "Pull the string!" as bison stampede onscreen. It is not clear what this is meant to mean; perhaps that Glen should act as puppeteer, controlling his own life instead of letting ...

This clip of Ed Wood parading about in drag is taken from the bonus materials of Legend Films' release of Plan Nine From Outer Space, the first ever colorized release of the movie. More Ed Wood home movies and commercials are included on the DVD, available at www.legendfilms.net From the Ed Wood entry on Wikipedia: "It is reported that Wood's mother, Lillian, always wanted a girl and sometimes dressed young Ed up in skirts and dresses. This went on until Ed was about 12 years old. Some have presumed this to be the origin of Wood's non-sexually oriented transvestite tendencies, but others believe that while on a skiing trip with his relatives, one of his aunts told him to wear a jacket, when he said he didn't have one, his aunt took off her own angora jacket and gave it to him (a theme later seen in Glen or Glenda). The story goes on to say that he liked the feel of the material and made a habit of wearing it." www.legendfilms.net

In memory of Vampira (1921-2008). So just thought I'd post this video I made back in 2002. Well it's not a Vampira tribute, it's an Ed Wood tribute, but close enough. The clips are all from Ed Wood movies, as well as the Tim Burton one. The song is based off "Johnny B Goode" by Chuck Berrry with my own lyrics.

Plan 9 from Outer Space - Vampira. Ed Wood, Golden Turkey Award

Plan 9 from Outer Space - Vampira. Plan 9 from Outer Space (originally titled as Grave Robbers from Outer Space) is a 1959 science fiction/horror film written and directed by Edward D. Wood, Jr. The film features Gregory Walcott, Mona McKinnon, Tor Johnson and Maila "Vampira" Nurmi. The film bills Béla Lugosi posthumously as a star, although footage of the actor had been shot by Wood for another film just before Lugosi's death in 1956. The plot of the film is focused on extraterrestrial beings who are seeking to stop humans from creating a doomsday weapon that would destroy the universe. In the course of doing so, the aliens implement "Plan 9", a scheme to resurrect Earth's dead as what modern audiences would consider zombies (called "ghouls" in the film itself) to get the planet's attention, causing chaos. For years, the film played on television in relative obscurity, until 1980, when author Michael Medved dubbed Plan 9 from Outer Space the "worst movie ever made". Wood was posthumously awarded Medved's Golden Turkey Award as the worst director ever.

Ed Wood (1994) Part 1/13

Hollywood visionary Tim Burton pays homage to another Hollywood visionary, albeit a less successful one, in this unusual fictionalized biography. The film follows Wood (Johnny Depp) in his quest for film greatness as he writes and directs turkey after turkey, cross-dresses, and surrounds himself with a motley crew of Hollywood misfits, outcasts, has-beens, and never-weres. The real story, however, is his friendship with aging, morphine-addicted Bela Lugosi (Martin Landau), whom he tries to help stage a comeback. Landau's unforgettable Oscar-winning performance must be seen to be believed, as must Rick Baker's Oscar-winning makeup. While it would have been easy to make a film simply ridiculing the bumbling director, Burton instead focuses on his driving passion for filmmaking and his unwavering persistence in the face of ridicule and failure. Possibly the most surprising aspect of the film is the genuine sentiment with which Burton treats the relationship between Wood and Lugosi; his devotion to Lugosi is touching, as is Lugosi's final soliloquy -- an inane bit of dialogue from the hilariously bad Bride of the Monster that grows into a poignant metaphor for the actor's life and ultimate triumph of his spirit. Even the look of the film is right; it manages to preserve the air of one of Wood's own films while retaining a sense of artistry in much of the composition on screen (note the scene at the drug rehab where Lugosi endures a horrifying night of detox). In all, Ed Wood ...
