[EuroArts 2072348] Beethoven: String Quartets

"And the Beethoven! They played Beethoven differently from the way Beethoven had been played before!" Said the composer William Schuman, then president of New York's Juilliard School of Music, who initiated the Juilliard String Quartet as a resident quartet at the famous music academy in 1946. Today the Juilliards have become a living American legend; they are regarded as one of the greatest of all string quartets, not least on account of their Beethoven recording which received a Grammy Award. This DVD is a unique document of a Beethoven concert they gave at Polling in Bavaria in 1975. It shows the quartet midway through a success story that has now lasted more than six decades. The beautiful baroque library of the former Augustinian Monastery to the south-west of Munich -- beloved of chamber musicians for its wonderful acoustic -- resounded with three of Beethoven's numerous quartets, an early piece (op.18 no.4, written in1799), a middle-period work (the first of the three Rasumovsky Quartets op.59, composed in 1806) and one of the late quartets (the famous stream of musical consciousness, op. 131, completed in 1826). The cast still included the now retired first violinist and founder of the quartet, Robert Mann, who always regarded himself as primus inter pares, with particular emphasis on the equality of all four players, and the second violinist Earl Carlyss who holds the colourful view that a string quartet is like a chair with four legs, none of which can be <b>...</b>

[Euroarts 2055238] Oboe Fantasy - Heinz Holliger

Heinz Holliger, oboe; Keller Quartet (András Keller, violin; János Pilz, violin; Zoltán Gál, viola; Judit Szabó, cello); Carolina Eyck, theremin; Robert Kolinsky, piano This DVD is a documentary of Heinz Holliger, the leading oboist of our day. As a composer Holliger has become a classic exponent of musical modernism, while as an oboist and conductor he is one of the most inspirational figures on the contemporary music scene. Here too we encounter him here as an enthusiastic guide through each of the work that recorded with the Keller Quartet in a private concert for the home viewer recorded at the Musik-Akademie in Basel in 2005. The programme is made up of four exceptionally interesting works, starting with Mozarts Quartet for oboe, violin, viola and cello K 370, a kind of crypto-concerto that the 25year-old composer wrote in Munich in 1781. The next work is another early piece, Benjamin Brittens Phantasy op. 2 for oboe and string quartet, which was composed in 1932, when the composer was 19. Holliger too was only 17 when he wrote his own Oboe Sonata in 19567, a work that strikes up a strange conversation between the oboist and his instrument. Bohuslav Martinus Fantasia for theremin, oboe, string quartet and piano is a mature work dating from 1945, when the composer was already 55 years of age. It was written for an instrument that is something like a pioneer of electronic instruments, invented by the engineer Lev Sergeyevich Termen (18961993) and operated by means of <b>...</b>

The cycle Má vlast (My Fatherland) is Smetana's glorious declaration of his love for his homeland, and who else could be better qualified to conduct this icon of Czech national music than Rafael Kubelik whose career has been interwoven with the Czech music scene for decades? Few conductors have taken as keen an interest in this work, or been more closely identified with its contents than he has. Here we hear it performed by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, often labelled "Kubelik's orchestra", at the Herkulessaal in Munich in 1984. Kubelik conducted the ensemble for nearly two decades, starting in 1961, a period described by music critic Joachim Kaiser as the conductor's "Golden Age". Born in 1914, the son of the internationally acclaimed Czech violinist, Jan Kubelik first conducted the Czech Philharmonic in 1934 and became its principal conductor in 1941. But in 1948 the Communists' seizure of power forced him to emigrate, and he subsequently was principal conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. Always particularly close to the music of his home region, he became famous for his interpretations of Dvořak, Janáček and Smetana. Kubelik died in 1996 and Bedřich Smetana's Má vlast had often featured at decisive turning points in his life. In June 1945, for example, he first conducted it at an open-air concert in Prague's Old Town Square to mark Czechoslovakia's newly restored political freedom. As a co-founder of <b>...</b>

Gil Shaham, violin; Orli Shaham, piano As their personal tribute to Mozart in his anniversary year 2006, Gil & Orli Shaham performed a selection of violin sonatas by the Austrian master in the Palais Daun-Kinsky in Vienna. Brimming with energy and bravery, tempered only by a deep understanding of the music, the siblings paid their respect to the composer on his 250th birthday. Violinist Gil Shaham is internationally recognized as a virtuosic and engaging classical artists by both audiences and critics alike. He is sought after throughout the world for concerto appearances with celebrated orchestras and conductors, as well as for recital and ensemble appearances on the great concert stages and at the most prestigious festivals. His sister Orli has established an impressive international reputation as a gifted pianist. Although they were born less than five years apart, the siblings seldom appear together in public. Apparently, their parents discouraged them from doing so, since Orli, as she explains, was "just ready to come out of the sandbox" when Gil was already having a big career. Max Raabe and his Palast Orchester give dance and film Music from the 1920s and 1930s a rousing revival. They specialise in recreating the sound of the 1920s and 1930s, performing songs by the Comedian Harmonists, Robert Stolz, Friedrich Hollaender, Franz Lehar, Theo Mackeben and Irving Berlin and evoke the nostalgic atmosphere that has captured the imaginations for generations and still charms audiences from all over the world performing music from the golden age of song-writing in pre-war Germany. They also feature highlights of the excellent music entertainment tradition of the Americas in the same period. The Kuijken Ensemble: Barthold Kuijken, transverse flute; Sigiswald Kuijken, violin; Wieland Kuijken, viola da gamba; Robert Kohnen, harpsichord The Kuijken Ensemble, made up of the three Belgian Kuijken brothers on flute, violin and viola da gamba and the harpsichordist Robert Kohnen count among the most distinguished of all present-day early-music specialists. They have long since branched out into conducting and other far-reaching ways of propagating authentic Baroque style. But they are each masters of a different set of instruments, so their occasional reunions for concerts become genuine occasions. With The Musical Offering, played here in a rigorously reduced scoring, they demonstrate their great flair for style and their long-standing experience and although they dont look at all alike, their shared musical heritage is audible. Bachs late masterpiece The Musical Offering (1747) is a musical homage written on the occasion of Bachs visit to King Frederick the Great of Prussia in Potsdam. Recorded in the beautiful setting of the historical Old Town Hall in Leipzig during the Bach anniversary year in 2000, the film captures some of the atmosphere of Bachs times. www.naxos.com

Alessandra Ferri (Juliet), Angel Corella (Romeo) Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala David Garforth Choreography by Kenneth MacMillan, adapted by Monica Parker, Georgina Parkinson & Julie Lincoln. The revival of the classically choreographed version of Prokofievs Romeo and Juliet by senior choreographer Kenneth MacMillan enjoyed a phenomenal success at La Scala in January 2000: it was the first time that Alessandra Ferri and Angel Corella, the acclaimed stars of the American Ballet Theatre, had danced together on stage. Hailed by the Italian press as the new star couple, they both brought to their roles the youthfulness and innocence reflected in Prokofievs music: Juliet, the young, inexperienced adolescent girl who puts all her faith in her feelings of love and suffers the heights of passion as well as the depths of despair, and Romeo, the carefree young man certain of his feelings as a lover, ready to turn the established order on its head as a result, and knowing no bounds in his love for Juliet. The intensive role-play of the two protagonists turns the lovers tragic end into a disaster that we experience with them, transcending the conventions of the storys familiarand thus predictable close. Romeo is one of the favourite roles of the Spanish dancer Angel Corella and, indeed, the part of the fiery young man seems tailor-made for him. Lukas Hagen, Rainer Schmidt, violins; Veronika Hagen, viola; Clemens Hagen, violoncello With its recordings of Mozarts string quartets Nos. 14 to 19, the Hagen Quartet exhibits some of the composers most refined compositional thinking and a remarkably wide range of emotions. These quartets were composed in the early 1780s and served as a tribute to Joseph Haydn, whom Mozart much admired. The Hagen Quartet is internationally regarded as a leading proponent of the genre, and after more than twenty years in the business, the siblings Lukas, Veronika and Clemens Hagen and second violinist Rainer Schmidt continue to bring an exceptional freshness and passion and an overwhelming sense of commitment to the music they cultivate. As Salzburgers, they have always been expected to play Mozart and these recordings from the 1998 Salzburg Festival show that their interpretations of the composers works are marked by great contrast and expression. They refer to the period performance style, but avoid the excesses of the authentic movement. The combination of youthful verve coupled with an intellectual grasp of Mozart's compositional techniques makes the Hagen Quartet's account of the so-called Haydn Quartets an extremely winning set of performances! www.naxos.com

Composed in 1691, the work can be described as the first ever musical drama, music, dance and stage effects are all combined in one Gesamtkunstwerk. Drama is coupled with opera; courtly dance rhythms with a farcical, bucolic play and the myth of national grandeur is treated with biting satire, thus creating a brilliant synthesis of the arts or, as conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt describes it, the first musical in history. The world-famous baroque specialist gathered a musical dream-team made up of his own orchestra, the Concentus musicus Wien and the best singers on the baroque scene. Barbara Bonney, Isabel Rey and Michael Schade all highly acclaimed artists took on the singing while a set of eminent actors played out the story on the stage. Harnoncourt and stage director Jürgen Flimm created a surprisingly concise version of the complicated story of the British King Arthur and his opponent Oswald. From 1970 until 1996 he did so as Gewandhaus Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, a position that has almost come to be identified with his name. He is still Conductor Laureate of the ensemble; the fact that he chose the orchestra for his birthday celebration expresses his gratitude and respect for the orchestra that accompanied him during momentous and troubled times. Peter Hofmann, Siegfried Vogel, Karan Armstrong, Leif Roar, Elizabeth Connell, Bernd Weikl, Directed for Stage by Götz Friedrich Chor der Bayreuther Fetsspiele; Orchester der Bayreuther Festspiele Woldemar Nelsson EuroArts presents this exclusive recording of Richard Wagners Opera Lohengrin live from the Bayreuth festival in 1982. Richard Wagner's three-act opera, an exquisitely lyrical piece, characterized by the composer's romantic vision of the individual's fight for freedom under an oppressive rule, has been described as Wagner's most Italianate opera This masterful and timeless interpretation by the famous opera director Götz Friedrich was filmed on the stage of the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth over a period of several days, but without audience, shortly before the start of the actual festival. In this way, undisturbed state-of-the-art filming was made possible within the limited space of the small 19th century auditorium and stage. The result is an intense, film-like rendering of one of the classic Bayreuth stagings with an ensemble of stars including Karen Armstrong and Bernd Weikl. The title-role is particularly suited to the dramatic and musical talents of Peter Hofmann, whose adoption of Wagnerian roles in the eighties before Parkinson disease forced his farewell from the stage - has been received with international and ongoing praise. He was the star of Wagner interpretation for more than a decade and this DVD pays tribute to the artists skills. www.naxos.com

[Euroarts 2057098] Lady Day - The Many Faces of Billie Holiday

Lady Day The Many Faces of Billie Holiday invites viewers to see the many faces of this dark lady of the sonnets, as one poet called her, and to appreciate her undying art more deeply. Most presentations feature Lady Day as the sad victim of hard times and drugs. The single fact of her life that matters above all others is that she was a great artist who, with Louis Armstrong, invented modern jazz singing. Mining a treasure-trove of completely new information, the producers set the record straight and beautifully. When the Ninth Symphony is performed at a New Years Eve concert, it becomes an even more spectacular event. Karajans rousing interpretation of Beethoven's most admired symphony has long acquired legendary status. Now Medici Arts is releasing it in a recording made in Berlins Philharmonic Hall on New Years Eve 1977 in celebration of the conductors 100th birthday this year. Born in Salzburg on 5 April 1908, Herbert von Karajan was one of the most widely respected performing musicians appearing in the past century. He influenced fellow musicians and public taste for generations through his live appearances and recordings, especially in the role of Principal Conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, which he led for more than 30 years, moulding the orchestra into an ensemble of peerless power, tonal beauty and stylistic flexibility. The Ninth is an affirmation of optimism and beauty, written when Beethoven was almost completely deaf and the final movement is considered by many to be the composer's crowning glory. It had been Beethoven's lifelong dream to set Schiller's Ode to Joy to music, for the poem expressed the fulfilment of Beethoven's most passionate desire: peace and brotherhood in the world. Gidon Kremer celebrates his 60th birthday in 2007 - he is, and has always been, one of the most headstrong and original artists in the music business. His return to JS Bachs partitas is a major event as Kremers first recording of these works was released almost a quarter of a century ago, and he hasnt played the partitas in public for over twenty years. Those who have followed Gidon Kremers artistic development over the past 25 years will note how much his tone and articulation have changed. The new rendering displays Kremers very personal sense of spontaneity and a readiness to take risks. In the early 1980s, after being declared persona non grata in the Soviet Union, Kremer moved to the West and made a recording of the solo partitas. The record went down in music history and for decades was a benchmark in the music guild. The young virtuoso was catapulted to fame virtually overnight in the Western world and hailed as the worlds best violinist by Herbert von Karajan. The DVD includes the solo partitas I, II, III, recorded at the Pfarrkirche Lockenhaus in 2002 and the documentary Back to Bach. The film includes rare archival footage and tells in a very personal way of Gidon Kremers encounters with Bachs music, accompanying the famous violin virtuoso in rehearsals, recording sessions and discussions with a few trusted confidants. When on stage Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920-1995) projected an aura and charisma that perfectly complemented his incomparable musical excellence. His personal life was shrouded in mystery often leading to the spread of rumours and wild speculation. All of this, however, is secondary to what he accomplished at the piano - both in recital and in recordings: Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli teacher of world-class pianists Martha Argerich and Maurizio Pollini - remains as much a legend today as he was during his lifetime. His stage presence, his attitude to the public, and his personal eccentricities all contributed to his reputation, but ultimately it was his piano playing and artistic integrity that set him apart.
