Braided Ficus

Ficus Tree Survival Story Part I Revival.mp4

This is a survival story of my Ficus houseplant in a container, not a bonsai (yet). It died due to Winter damage and revive itself 10 month later! Just wanted to share the story to show how plants can survive extreme conditions and treatments. I was very sad to see this plant die since it was with me for over 14 years, but I am very happy to see it sprout new leaves and I plan to reincarnate it into a bonsai, in the future. I will post update video of this plant.

Opuntia Ficus Indica

www.slimdynamics.com Opuntia ficus-indica is a specie of cactus. It is crop-plant with a high importance in the agriculture of arid and semiarid parts of the world. Opuntia is farmed mainly as a fruit harvest, but also for the vegetable nopales and other uses. Most culinary references to the "prickly pear cactus" are citing to this species. The name "tuna" is also employed for the fruit from this cactus, and for Opuntia generally (according to Alexander von Humboldt, it was a word with Haitian origin admitted into the Spanish speech circa 1500AD) Opuntia has various medicinal uses - including being used as a hangover cure. Lately, extracts for the cactus pear fruit has demonstrated to have antioxidative attributes and can cause decrease of DNA damage in human peripheral lymph cells. This extract has become a possible source of raw material for pharmaceutic and operational food industries. [4] The shoots of O. ficus-indica have been shown to contain at least some mescaline. The plant is considered a pest species in parts of the Mediterranean due to its ability to spread rapidly beyond the zones it was originally cultivated in. In Hebrew, the plant is referred to as "tzabar." The flowers and stems are antispasmodic, diuretic and emollient. The split stems have been bound around injured limbs as a first aid measure. The flowers are astringent and are used to reduce bleeding and treat problems of the gastro-intestinal tract, especially diarrhoea, colitis and irritable bowel <b>...</b>

Time-lapse - turning a nearly 10" Ficus bowl

I have a large pile of large logs of Indian Laurel Fig (Ficus microcarpa), AKA Chinese Banyan, AKA Cuban Laurel, AKA Green Island Fig. I recently manually resawed one of these in half (took nearly 2 hours over 2 days!), and cut out a 9-7/8" circle about 2.5" thick from the crotch area of one. I sealed it entirely in Anchorseal to prevent checking (splitting radially from the pith, or center), but it formed a lot of mold inside. This is a problem with Ficus in general I find. Today I finally got around to chucking it into my Jet 12x20 lathe and turning a rough bowl. The wood is green, as am I at turning things. This was the largest thing I've turned, but it wasn't too difficult. This is a time-lapse shot at 1FPS, for an increase of 30x the original speed. The camera indicated to me that it was a 72 minute effort, so just a bit over an hour. I guess I could turn something like 8-16 of these in a day if I had all the blanks prepared ahead of time. It's a bit rough to note that Ficus is a worthless wood. I'd get very little if I tried to sell this. I wish instead a large black walnut (Juglans nigra) had fallen over. I'd get a small fortune for turnings made from that. Of course, I don't consider myself worthy of good wood yet. I'm still learning. One day... You can see pics of the blank and finished bowl here: www.flickr.com

Climbing a Giant Ficus Trees in Ghana

The Ficus tree is truly amazing in that it positions itself advantageously on an existing tree and after successive years of growing it essentially out-competes or 'strangles' the original host so that the interior core will eventually hollow out (what used to be the host decays). The living giant ficus remains as a web-like cylinder towering where the original tree once stood. Many areas protected for eco-tourism in Ghana contain the giant ficus trees as they are usually sought after as a curiousity.

BONSAI-EASY NEW METHOD-PART 13-FICUS PRUNING

THIS IS A PRUNING OF A RATHER OVERGROWN FICUS (FIG) TREE. THIS IS FICUS BENJAMINA, OR THE WEEPING FICUS. THIS ONE HAD NOT BEEN EXAMINED IN ABOUT A YEAR. GETTING IT OUT OF THE POT WAS A SLIGHT PROBLEM AS IT IS A COMMERCIAL POT AND HAS AN INTERNAL LIP. BUT BEING THAT THE GROWTH MEDIUM IS SPHAGNUM MOSS, IT COMES OUT RELATIVELY EASILY, WHEREAS HAD THIS BEEN IN SOIL, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A CRUMBLING MESS. FICUS TREES CAN DEVELOP FIGS, WHICH I HAVE HAD HAPPEN OCCASSIONALLY. THEY ARE HEARTY GROWERS, AND THOUGH FULL SUN IS SUGGESTED, THEY DO WELL AS HOUSEPLANTS, AND MINE DO FINE UNDER THE SHADE OF A LARGE OAK. THIS ONE NEEDED A MAJOR PRUNING, WHICH IT GOT.(***PLEASE VIEW PART 12 ABOUT THE WARNING ON HANDLING SPHAGNUM MOSS BEFORE YOU WORK WITH SPHAGNUM MOSS***).

Ginseng Ficus

The Ficus retusa or "Ginseng Ficus" (or even Ficus microcarpa var. nitida) is a type of ficus which has very bulbous roots that form a shape similar to ginger roots which give them their common name. It is native to Malaysia and Taiwan. They are easy plants to grow since they require low amounts of light, can be watered once weekly, and have so far seemed to be resistant to bugs
