Am 6. Dezember 2008 wurde in Athen der 15-jährige Alexandros Grigoropoulos ermordet. Er starb durch einen gezielten Schuss aus der Waffe des Polizisten Epaminondas Korkoneas. Daraufhin entluden sich in Griechenland aggressionen, wodurch es Wochenlang zu täglichen Ausschreitungen kam, die der Regierung über den Kopf wuchsen. Nur durch den Einsatz von faschisten Schlägertrupps konnte der Staat langsam wieder Herr der Lage werden. Es kam Weltweit zu unzähligen Solidaritäts-Aktionen mit den Kämpfen in Griechenland. The 2008 Greek riots started on 6 December 2008, when Alexandros Grigoropoulos a 15-year-old student, was fatally shot by Epaminondas Korkoneas, a police officer. Korkoneas, accompanied by another police officer on a patrol, discharged his weapon in the direction of Grigoropoulos who was part of a group of youths in Exarcheia district of central Athens. The death of Grigoropoulos resulted in large protests and demonstrations, which escalated to widespread rioting, with hundreds of rioters damaging property and engaging riot police with Molotov cocktails, stones and other objects. Demonstrations and rioting soon spread to several other cities, including Thessaloniki, the country's second-largest city. Outside Greece, solidarity demonstrations, riots and, in some cases, clashes with local police also took place in a number of European cities including London, Paris, Brussels, Rome, Dublin, Berlin, Frankfurt, Madrid, Barcelona, Amsterdam, The Hague, Copenhagen, Bordeaux, Seville as well as Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, and the western Cypriot city of Paphos. On the night of Saturday, December 6th, two Special Guards of the Greek police clashed with a small group of young men. The exact details of what took place are still unclear, but it is known that one of the Guards fired three shots, and one of those bullets caused the death of 15-year-old Alexander Grigoropoulos - whether the injury was made by an accidental ricochet or deliberate shot remains to be determined. The two Guards are now in jail awaiting trial, the shooter charged with homicide. This incident sparked an immediate and widespread response in the form of angry demonstrations and riots in many Greek cities that have continued at varying levels to this day - though dimming in intensity recently. Alexander's death appears to have been a catalyst, unleashing widespread Greek anger towards many issues - police mistreatment of protesters, unwelcome education reforms, economic stagnation, government corruption and more. People in Melbourne joined in world-wide expressions of outrage at the police killing of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos with a rally outside the Greek Consulate-General. The protest was lent an added dimension by the police killing of another 15-year-old in the innner-Melbourne suburb of Northcote only two nights previously. Speakers at the rally drew parallels also with the case of Lex Wotton on Palm Island, sentenced to six years imprisonment for allegedly leading a riot following the death in custody of an Aboriginal man, whose police killer went on to receive a promotion ... As part of the event people were invited to add messages to a board addressed to comrades in Greece. The rally took place in foul weather, which had an effect especially on the quality of the sound in this video.
