Banking On Change - India - March 2010

JS Parthibhan is a bank manager with a difference: he's interested in people, not numbers. Through micro loans, he helps villagers in rural areas develop a sense of entrepreneurship and self-respect. Travelling on his moped to isolated villages, Parthibhan has made it his mission to bring his bank to the people, not the other way around. For him, reforming the system should happen at the most basic level: face to face. "It is about more than just dealing with money. It is dealing with people, with their aspirations." These villagers need a loan for a new kiln. He educates them about money and talks them through the process of opening an account. "If I were a doctor I would care for the people coming to me the same way as I do now." In the past years, he's successfully backed countless similar ventures: "You can talk about financial crisis, but the importance is cultivating people. If you do that, everything falls in to the right place". Now here's a role model for bankers from Wall Street to Tokyo. Andrew Hinton

Indian women fighting against female infanticide To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com An Indian proverb says raising a daughter is like watering your neighbour's garden and the burden of having girls means many are killed at birth. We follow the difficult lives of those who survive the practice. Twenty seven percent of Indians live below the poverty line and as a women, this economic status brings a life of enmity. A bride's parents must provide a dowry which often bankrupts the family. As a result female infanticide is a widespread tradition: "We accept the first girl, the second should be killed, then the third will be a son." But now the women are fighting back by forming self-help groups which offer a range of programmes from skills training, to saving and loan schemes. It's all in the hope that through giving women a more constructive role in society more girls will be saved. March 2012

For the first time since 2007, India and Pakistan are set to open a historic border crossing for commercial traffic passing through the two nations. The "integrated check post," as it is known, close to Wagah, the only road crossing between the antagonistic neighbours, is the first of 13 border posts set to open following years of negotiations between the two sides. Palimpsest: India and Europe

Since the last few years, the influence of India is visible everywhere in Europe. Its culture and way of life is increasingly leaving its impression on the daily lives of the people. In Rome, Paris, Vienna, Berlin, and Madrid and many other European cities, it is possible to see India expressing itself through its Bollywood, cuisine, spirituality, yoga, ayurveda, classical dance and music and its frenetic colours. Books by Indian writers occupy prime positions in book shops and libraries in these countries. In fact this "Indian influence", despite the negligible presence of an Indian diaspora, has helped in shaping the kaleidoscopic culture that Europe is famous for. This film tries to explore how India's diverse and colourful culture is gently and quietly getting visible in countries that are not bound by common language, old historical or colonial ties, trying to find an answer to this question: Why is Indian culture getting popular in Europe? India's cultural, social, economic and geographical diversity and its ancient civilization, offers a significant and coherent alternative to Western cultural values. A country that is still in touch with its past, India has compelled the West to look at it afresh. There is renewed respect for its spiritual traditions and the fact that India is home to two of the oldest religions in the world - Hinduism and Buddhism. The film has attempted to capture impressionistically different manifestations of India's spirit in Europe. Through ...

India creates world's cheapest computer

At the low price of $45, the world's cheapest computer tablet, made in India, is targeted mostly at students. In a country where laptops range from anywhere between $400 and $1000, and where the average income is much lower, the hope is that more people, particularly the country's youth, will have greater access to technology. In the next few months over 100000 such computers will be available in select universities. If successful, India may even sell it commercially, but experts say the design still has a long way to go.
