Jean Baptiste Lully (1632-1687) - Airs de trompettes

Orchestre de Chambre, Paul Kuentz in the picture Versailles I didn't know that Lully was born in Firenze, Italia Lully was born in Florence, Italy. Lully had little education, musical or otherwise, but he had a very natural talent to play the guitar and violin and to dance. In 1646, he was discovered by Roger de Lorraine, the chevalier de Guise, son of Charles, Duke of Guise, and taken to France by him, where he entered the services of Mademoiselle de Montpensier (la Grande Mademoiselle) as a scullery-boy and Italian-language teacher. With the help of this princess, his musical talents were cultivated. He studied the theory of music under Nicolas Métru. It has been said that a scurrilous song on his patroness (the doggerel he set to music refers to a "sigh" she produced while at stool) resulted in his dismissal. It is far more likely that he did not want to moulder out in the provinces with the exiled princess. (en.wikipedia.org)

Jean Baptiste Mondino - La Danse des Mots

Music Clip of Jean Baptiste Mondino : "La Danse des Mots" (words danse), directed by famous French Jean Baptiste Mondino (1983). He invented the first world modern music video clip with his own song (himself singing). This is the first time a music video is not filming only the artirst performing, but there is full of many different and coherent artistic creations and collaborations from others French actors, dancers, smurfers, painters, taggers, kids, etc... This is the first time we hear rap music as well. It is made of real filmings, pixilations, animations, cartoons, and even scratching directly on the film. It is full of colors and really enjoyable and contemporary. It is all about private jokes on the French language. Now, this master piece is a member of the permanent video library of the New York Museum of Modern Art : it belongs to the History of Humanity. Enjoy ! Cadmus et Hermione, opéra de Jean-Baptiste Lully (prologue)

- Opéra (2008 - 2h) réalisé par Martin Fraudreau . Solistes, danseurs, choeur et orchestre du Poème Harmonique. Avec André Morsch : Cadmus - Claire Lefiliâtre : Hermione - Isabelle Druet : Charite, Melisse - Camille Poul : Amour, Pales - Arnaud Marzorati : Arbas, Pan - Jean-François Lombard : Nourrice, Echion. Vincent Dumestre : direction musicale Benjamin Lazar : mise en scène. - Cadmus et Hermione is a tragédie en musique in a prologue and five acts by Jean-Baptiste Lully. The French-language libretto is by Philippe Quinault, after Ovids Metamorphoses. It was first performed on April 27, 1673, at the Paris Jeu de Béquet. The prologue, in praise of King Louis XIV, represents him as Apollo slaying the Python of Delphi. The opera itself concerns the love story of Cadmus, legendary founder and king of Thebes, Greece, and Hermione (Harmonia), daughter of Venus and Mars. Other characters include Pallas Athene, Cupid, Juno, and Jupiter. With Cadmus et Hermione, Lully invented the form of the tragédie en musique (also known as tragédie lyrique). From contemporary Venetian opera, Lully incorporated elements of comedy among the servants, elements which he would later avoid, as would subsequent reformers in Italian opera. A contemporary transcription of the overture by Jean-Henri dAnglebert remains a possible part of the harpsichord repertoire. In early 2008, the French ensemble Le Poème Harmonique staged a performance of the opera in Paris and Rouen, among other places.

Hidden treasures - Jean-Baptiste Krumpholtz - Concerto for Harp & Orchestra (1777) - II. Adagio

Painting: "Smugglers at night" by Ivan Aivazovsky. History (based on materials from the Grove Dictionary of Music): Jean-Baptiste Krumpholtz (1747-1790) was initially planning to become a horn player before ultimately choosing to study harp. Returning to Prague in 1771 after a long stay in France and Flanders, he greatly impressed the violinist Pichl and pianist Dusek who promptly sent him to Vienna with recommendations to Haydn who took him on as a composition pupil and as solo harpist in the retinue of Count Esterhazy. In 1776 Krumpholtz undertook a long concert tour of Europe, performing in Leipzig on a "harpe organisée", gradually becoming the most acclaimed harp virtuoso of the late 18th century. He is no less important for his efforts to perfect the harp: in 1785 the Parisian firm of Naderman built an instrument to Krumpholtz's specification with 24 strings, eight of which were metal, and with an eighth pedal that opened five shutters in the resonator. Other improvements by him were incorporated after his death into the Erard harp at the beginning of the 19th century, the prototype of the modern double-action harp. After his death a harp method, said to have been written by him for a German baroness, was published by JM Plane as "Principes pour la harpe" in 1800. Krumpholtz's concertos, sonatas and variations for harp, which appeared in Paris from about 1775 (many were later reprinted in London), became staples of the repertory and are still highly respected. Mistral Gagnant- Jean Baptiste Maunier

Translation: To sit on a bench with you, for 5 minutes, And look at the people (passing), if any, (lit.: as many as there are) To talk to you about the good times that are gone, or (that) will come back, Squeezing your small fingers in my hand Then feed the stupid pigeons Pretend at kicking them and hear your laughter crawling the walls (could mean: tearing apart the walls, but I think 'crawling' is what is meant) [Your laughter] that, most of all, knows how to cure my injuries To tell you a bit about how I was (mino?? anyone who can help here?) Those fabulous sweets that we stole at the shop (marchand=shopkeeper) Car-en-sac, Mints, one-franc-a-piece caramels (These are all particular kinds of sweets) While the mistrals are swelling (Don't know if I express myself correctly here. The mistral is a hot southern wind, well known and a bit feared by farmers in certain regions in France) To walk in the rain again with you, for 5 minutes And look at life, as much as there is (I think 'life' here means people being busy on the streets, just as in the first stanza) To tell you about the (whole) world, while devouring you with my eyes (lit.: eating) To talk a bit about your mother And jump in the puddles to make her grumble To muddy our shoos, and not care about it And to hear your laughter, as one hears the sea To stop, and start again backwards To tell you, most of all, the (carambars?) of yore and the (cocos bohères?)
