"Mateo solo bien se lame," is a record that requires many superlatives in order to do it justice: from it's first moments, the music is lilting, poetic, intimate, in turns life-affirming and melancholic, with pulsating percussion backed by unheard-of guitar chords and tunings (perhaps the reason for the frequent Caetano Veloso and Nick Drake comparisons); it is an album that sounds—simply put—honest. The record was released at the end of 1972 in both Argentina and Uruguay, and was received from that first moment as a classic in those countries, a position it still occupies today. When El Kinto co-founder and iconoclastic maniac Eduardo Mateo traveled to Buenos Aires in October of 1971 to record what came to be "Mateo solo bien se lame," his situation was unusual. With the explosion of candombe-beat music on the popular scene, Mateo had become a living legend of Uruguayan music. Yet apart from the "Musicasión 4 1/2" compilation, which had been released in July of that year, there were no published recordings of Mateo available, whether as a soloist or with his already dissolved group El Kinto. By this time, the public had a clear notion of the dreamy character of Mateo that by the end of his brief life had made him a part-time panhandler and apparent acid casualty. El Maestro y Genio uruguayo Eduardo Mateo (1940-1990) por Guilherme de Alencar Pinto: Eduardo Mateo fue uno de los músicos más influyentes de la música uruguaya. Desarrolló un estilo muy personal e inimitable de cantar y de tocar la guitarra y exploró mundos nuevos con sus músicas y sus letras. Nació en 1940 en Montevideo. Ya en su infancia tomó contacto con el candombe, la murga y la música popular carioca. Aprendió, con familiares y amigos, a tocar diversos instrumentos de percusión, cavaquinho y guitarra. A principios de los años ´60 ya era un respetado guitarrista profesional y un intérprete de bossa nova con pocos iguales en el mundo. Pero progresivamente fue asimilando otras influencias, especialmente la de los Beatles, que lo llevaron a agarrar la guitarra eléctrica y desarrollar una carrera roquera. Junto a Ruben Rada fundó el grupo El Kinto en 1967. El Kinto fue uno de los primeros conjuntos pop uruguayos en adoptar el castellano y sentó las bases del candombe-beat (la fusión de candombe con rock que hasta hoy mantiene su plena vigencia). La propuesta de El Kinto se amplió en las Musicasiones, una serie de cuatro happenings multimedia coordinados por Mateo y Horacio Buscaglia en 1969. A partir de 1970 Mateo se lanzó en carrera solista. La década del ´70 estuvo marcada por una acentuación de su personalidad difícil, de envolvimiento con drogas, de sospechas de locura, de un estilo de vida que lo apartó de la posibilidad de una carrera regular y con frecuencia lo <b>...</b>
