Van der Wal grew up in the city of the Den Haag. She attended college in The Netherlands and earned a bachelor's degree in economics. She manages her own financial affairs and businesses. Van der Wal has appeared on many magazine covers and in many catalogs. She started her career with Victoria's Secret in 1989. She now has her own line of clothing and fragrances. Van der Wal received the Lifetime Achievement Award, part of the Dutch Model Awards, on May 22, 2008 in Amsterdam. In 2005 Frederique had a lily named after her: Frederique's Choice. Since then she has started the world's first brand of flowers under the name Frederique's Choice, which saw its official launch in 2008. Van der Wal has also appeared in several movies and television shows, most notably on the Travel Channel.
