GOOD: Oil Addiction

good.is If we're addicted to oil, our twelve-step program should begin with admitting that we have a problem. As the price of oil creeps higher, finding new energy sources is more important than ever. But the search for alternatives, combined with environmental disruptions, is putting new pressures on other essentials like food. There are some things that are going well in the world. There've been clashes between gunmen from different tribal areas, resulting in at least 13 deaths. Ship Oil Spill: New Zealand 'worst disaster' keeps leaking

The condition of a stricken cargo ship stuck on a reef and leaking oil off the coast of New Zealand worsened on Wednesday, with about 70 containers falling overboard and the vessel moving onto a steeper lean. Aerial footage shows the ship has a large crack on one side and is listing sharply. Hundreds of tons of heavy fuel oil have spilled from the hull, leading New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key to call it the country's biggest maritime environmental disaster. Video: Ship stuck on reef, leaks oil near New Zealand

A large container ship stuck on a reef off the coast of New Zealand is leaking oil. Maritime New Zealand said on Thursday the leak appeared to be intermittent and coming from damaged pipes rather than from fuel tanks. It added the extent of the spillage was hard to assess given the extensive damage to the vessel. The 775-foot (236-metre) Liberia-flagged Rena struck the Astrolabe Reef, about 12 nautical miles from Tauranga Harbour, early on Wednesday. It has been floundering there since. Maritime New Zealand said the 25 crew on board of the Rena were safe and trying to stop more oil from leaking. The agency added that so far, four seabirds had died in the oil slick, which extends about three miles (five kilometres) from the ship. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Rebel Order: Libya for Libyans, Oil for West?

Libya's new rebel leaders are seeking to restore order in Tripoli, encouraging fighters to return home. The National Transitional Council will move to the capital from its stronghold of Benghazi within the next week. Although, Colonel Gaddafi remains at large and some parts of the country are still under the control of his loyalist fighters. NATO continues aerial strikes on Gaddafi troops near his home city of Sirte, saying the UN mandate to protect civilians still stands. The coalition's also moving to release billions of dollars of the former leader's frozen assets, to fund reconstruction. And while most Libyans are enjoying the first taste of revolutionary freedom, there are some accusations that NATO states are looting the vast oil riches. Iraq: Oil and Gas Part 1

The weekly program: Oil and gas dedicated a special episode about Kurdistan in Iraq. The program shed lights on the oil sector, which is a pillar of the province's economy, after the government enacted a law to regulate this sector in 2007. Al Arabiya camera passed on the three largest oil fields in the region: Toki, Taq Taq and Khurmala which represent together more than 90% of the oil production in the region, 225 thousand barrels per day. The episode included interviews with international and local oil companies' officials, operating in Kurdistan, to explain their current and future plans. The program inquired about the opinions of oil companies on the Interim Agreement between Erbil and Baghdad which was signed at the beginning of the year and which revived the flow of oil exports from the region, after it stopped in 2009. The discussion focuses on the main challenges facing the oil sector in the region, particularly the disagreement between Erbil and Baghdad over the sharing of the revenues from oil exports, while everybody is eagerly waiting for the federal law regulating the oil and gas sector in Iraq, expected to be promulgated in the end of 2011. Man Enjoys Drinking Car Oil

Meet Muhammad Omar, a man who drinks motor oils and says they are great natural energizing drinks. The Yemeni mechanic who lives in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, says he's been drinking brake oils and lubricants as part of his "diet" since he was 17 and began working as a mechanic. Omar's lifestyle is unique to him and we certainly do not recommend trying it out. When we met him, we wanted to see how a man who consumes engine oils and petrochemicals seems to be leading a normal lifestyle. "I have been drinking all kinds of engine oils and consuming lubricants for 28 years now. I need to drink these oils to sustain myself", said the tire serviceman. Omar chose to work in a car maintenance center in Mecca to literally sustain himself. From a medical point of view, Dr. Abdel Hamid Jalhoun, a specialist in Internal Medicine, says that Omar's is not an unconventional case. He is just like those who sustain themselves by eating frogs and desert locusts. While we may find it difficult to tolerate such behavior it's important to note that Omar's behavior is psychologically motivated. "These oils and lubricants do not contain any toxic substances or abnormal ingredients," he says. The mechanic consumes a quantity of oil that is enough to keep a car engine running for 2500 miles. He says that he usually drinks two to three motor oil bottles a day and sometimes even four, in addition to lubricants. Shadi Hassan, a regular customer, was amazed to see Omar drinking motor oils. According to many experts, we are about to reach the point of "peak oil" -- the level at which supply can no longer keep up with demand. This, say the doomsayers, could send economies spinning into turmoil and up-end our comfortable, urban lifestyles. But others claim predictions like this are simply scaremongering. They believe supply will match demand for decades to come. So who's telling the truth? 'Peak Oil' investigates. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures
