RAMALLAH - Four Palestinians were injured during clashes with Israeli forces near Ofer jail at a demonstration in support of hunger-striking prisoners, medics told Ma'an. Activist Tayseer Arabsha was moderately wounded after being hit in the head by a rubber bullet, Palestinian Red Crescent officials said. Three others were slightly injured by rubber bullets, they added. Protesters gathered near the Ramallah-district military jail to show solidarity with Palestinian prisoners on hunger-strike in Israel jails. Israeli forces also fired tear gas, sound grenades and waste water to disperse the demonstrators, witnesses said. An Israeli army spokeswoman said she was not familiar with the use of rubber bullets by forces dispersing the protest. A wave of hunger-strike by Palestinians jailed in Israel peaked two weeks ago, when over a thousand detainees joined long-term hunger-strikers on Palestinian Prisoners Day. Prisoners groups estimate 2000 detainees are now refusing food in a bid to improve their conditions. On the evening of May 14, following reports that a deal had been reach to end the mass hunger strike by Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, hundreds showed up in the streets of Ramallah to express their support for the prisoners and also to mark the Nakba (the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people during the establishment of Israel), commemorated annually on May 15. As conflicting reports emerged about the purported deal, the father of administrative detainee Thaer Halahleh - who has been on hunger strike for 77 days - gave a short speech stating his son and seven other long-term hunger strikers will remain on strike "until freedom or martyrdom." Vernon Dalhart (April 6,1883 - Sept.14,1948) was a popular United States singer and songwriter of the early decades of the 20th century. He is a major influence in the field of Country Music. Dalhart was born Marion Try Slaughter in Marion County, Jefferson, Texas. He took his stage-name from two towns, Vernon and Dalhart in Texas, between which he punched cattle in the 1890s. Dalhart's father, Robert Marion Slaughter was killed in a fight with his brother-in-law, Bob Castleberry, when Vernon was age 10.
