Singing PM: 'Fats' Putin over the top of 'Blueberry Hill' with piano solo

Full video of Vladimir Putin playing the piano and singing "Blueberry Hill". The Russian prime minister is used to taking to the stage, but this time it was not for one of his speeches. Vladimir Putin made his audience sit up and take note, as he sang at a charity fundraiser. The reception at an ice stadium in St. Petersburg was dedicated to fighting children's cancer. International celebrities including Kevin Costner, Gerard Depardieu, Mickey Rourke, Sharon Stone, Kurt Russell, Vincent Cassel, Monica Belucci, Ornella Muti, Goldie Hawn and many others attended the benefit concert. Many of the stars are actively involved in charity work which draws needed attention to children's oncological and ophthalmological diseases. When the hostess approached Putin's table and asked him to sing for the audience, his immediate reaction was "are you kidding me?" But the hostess was determined to get the prime minister on the mic and reminded him about the songs he sang with the Russian sleeper agents extradited from the US last summer. Putin attempted to evade the proposal by saying that the singing she was referring to had come from the heart. However, after seeing the pictures of ill children shown to the audience on the big screen, he took to the stage. "Like the majority of people I cannot -- but do like to sing and to play -- so you'll have to rough it," he warned as he sat at the piano and played the beginning of Blueberry Hill. The tune was immediately caught by Maceo Parker's ...

Putin's cult-like status

www.euronews.net Vladimir Putin has a near cult status today. Looking at media coverage over the past few years, most was supposed to make him look good. Once the seemingly meek prime minister of Boris Yeltsin as the colossus of the old Soviet Union melted away in 1999, Putin came to be seen as not only shrewd but invincible and virile.

RT Exclusive: Larry King on Putin's 'it' factor

Russian PM Vladimir Putin was one of the last guests that broadcasting legend Larry King interviewed during the course of his extraordinary career -- and Larry told RT he was very impressed with the force of Putin's personality and charisma. "I had an affinity with him", King told RT. "You try to get that with a lot of guests, but I really had it with him...he has qualities that have nothing to do with politics...they change a room." The legendary TV host also said that he was not in the least surprised to hear Putin will be running for president in the 2012 election. "There are certain lives that you can't leave", said King, "and the political life is one of those. When you talk to a political leader who is either out of office, or not in a position of great power, you miss that power -- it's an aphrodisiac." The CNN anchor also spoke at length about what had impressed him about Vladimir Putin back in 2000, saying that even his crew liked him when they filmed in New York. That first interview, of course, is most often remembered for the exchange between King and Putin about the 'Kursk', the Russian nuclear submarine that sank in the Barents Sea in August 2000. Asked by the host about what happened, Putin simply said "It sank." It's become a famous statement -- one Larry King called "a great television moment" and a "brilliant way to answer a difficult question. It was a combination of being new and being direct," King told RT. Asked to compare the man he interviewed last ...

Medvedev, Putin dive & fish the Volga

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have gone on a joint fishing trip to the country's most beloved river -- the Volga. The politicians headed for the southwestern city of Astrakhan on Tuesday to relax, do some fishing and even try their hand at underwater hunting. After a short speed-boat trip, Dmitry Medvedev and Vladimir Putin took the covers off their spinning rods and the president was lucky enough to pull a mid-sized pike out of the Volga depths. Dmitry Medvedev put his well-known photography skills to the test during an underwater photo shoot using a special camera. It is not the first time the two have spent quality time together. They have already shared the pleasures of mountain-skiing and bicycle rides, and played badminton while at home in Moscow. The tandem's vacation on the Volga River has showcased both leaders' support for free fishing in Russia, and their willingness to safeguard this traditional activity for all of Russia's citizens. Putin said he had seen at a depth of about two meters -- the sea was still and the water transparent. The chief archeologist explained to Putin that amphorae often broke when the ancient ships were loaded or unloaded, so the sailors just threw them into the sea.

He came to the surface holding two ancient Greek jugs. Putin also visited an archeological camp and several excavation sites. He spoke with local researchers about the possibility of creating a sanctuary that would include both land and sea. Phanagoria is the largest ancient settlement in modern-day Russia. The town was established around the 5th century BC. But at the turn of the 10th century, the inhabitants fled their homes for some unknown reason. Exploration of Phanagoria began in the late 18th century, after Russia's annexation of Taman. But scientific research in the area did not begin until 1936.

Putin: Measure your success by non-fired missiles!

The Russian Prime Minister says he's alarmed by NATO's approach towards bombing Libya. At a news conference following Russian-Swedish talks, Putin said the coalition is quick to act no matter the cost. Putin says: "It's well-known that I used to serve in the KGB. At that time, the Soviet Union was waging a war in Afghanistan. Many of my friends served in Afghanistan. One of them was the head of the advisors group on the security bodies in Herat. One day, he went on leave, and I asked him, 'Listen Sasha, how's the situation there?' And at that time, our country had a very patriotic spirit. We believed that we were doing a very good thing having this war in Afghanistan. His reply came back unexpectedly: 'You know, without my signature no single missile or bomb attack can be fired.' 'So what?' said I. 'I assess my success and my achievements by the number of orders that I don't sign.' For me, it sounded just shocking. Can you imagine hearing that from a KGB officer at that time? I asked, why? He said, 'Do you know how many peaceful civilians perish because of these missile attacks, no matter what reasons are behind them?' Sometimes I contemplate how easily decisions on using force are made today in international affairs, and it leaves me gobsmacked. And that happens against the background of all the fuss around human rights and humanism which the modern civilized world seemingly practices. Don't you see a significant contradiction here between theory, the words and deeds ...

Russia: Putin's Promises | European Journal

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will be running for President again. The current President, Medvedev, will run for Prime Minister - trading roles. This political horsetrading benefits only a small elite of political functionaries and oligarchs, who don't have to fear much of a change of the current situation. And the mood among the rural population, which supported Putin up until now, doesn't seem to have changed either. He has often promised a flourishing Russia and entranced villagers with the hope of an improvement in their harsh living conditions. However not much has changed in reality and Putin's image as a mover and shaker remains untarnished.

Taking a tour around Moscow's freshly-renovated Theatre of Nations, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, known for his keen interest in music, could not resist the temptation to check out the venue's brand new acoustic system for himself. Stepping onto the stage, the PM was so captivated by the beautiful white grand piano that he immediately sat down at the instrument and started playing his favorite tune -- an old Soviet number, "From What the Homeland Starts." A quartet of young musicians from the theater joined in the impromptu performance, bringing in the sounds of Russia's national instruments. Putin made his piano debut in December 2010 at a charity fundraiser dedicated to fighting children's cancer.
