Great Singer + Great Song + Great Personality = Mohammad Rafi Muhammad Rafi was born in Kotla Sultan Singh located near Amritsar in the then undivided Punjab. Mohd Rafi had five older brothers ad his father's name was Hajji Ali Mohammad. Lovingly addressed as "Pheeko" by his family, Rafi started showing his inclination towards music at a very early age when he used to imitate the chants of a wandering beggar in his village. In the year 1935, Rafi's family moved to Lahore. Rafi's love for music was recognized soon by his family and he was encouraged to pursue it further. Thus, Mohamed Rafi went on to seek training in Hindustani classical music from eminent personalities like Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, Pundit Jiwanlal Matto and Firoze Nizami. Rafi's first public performance was at the tender age of 13. One day Rafi along with his brother Hamid went to attend a performance by the renowned KL Saigal. But there was a power failure at the venue and the legendary singer refused to sing. When the audience began to lose patience, Rafi's brother Hamid requested the organizer to allow Rafi to keep the audience entertained till the power came back. He was allowed to do so and it turned out to be the correct exposure for him. Among the audience was seated the great composer Shyam Sunder who immediately recognized immense talent and untapped potential in Rafi. He invited Rafi to come to Bombay for a recording. Mohammad Rafi (December 24, 1924 -- July 31, 1980), the playback singer whose career spanned four decades received National Award and 6 Filmfare Awards. In 1967, he was honoured with the Padma Shri awarded by the Government of India. Rafi is best known for romantic and duet songs, which he playback sings with the technique to mould the voice according to characters of the actor on the screen. Rafi's first public performance came at the age of 13, when he was allowed to sing at a concert in Lahore featuring KL Saigal. In 1944, Rafi moved to Mumbai (then Bombay) and poet Tanvir Naqvi introduced him to some of film producers including Abdur Rashid Kardar, Mehboob Khan and actor-director Nazeer. Rafi was associated with many music directors of his time, most notably Naushad. In the late 1950s and 1960s, Rafi worked with other composers of the era such as OP Nayyar, Shankar Jaikishan and SD Burman.

NEW DELHI: Without him, Guru Dutt wouldn't have been the same serenading Waheeda Rehman in Chaudhvin Ka Chand. Without him, Dev Anand wouldn't have looked so heart-broken crooning Din dhal jaye hai in Guide. And without him, Shammi Kapoor's rebellious yell, Chahe koi mujhe junglee kahe, would have lost much of its manic energy. Without Mohammed Rafi, who passed away on July 31, 1980, exactly 30 years ago, some of the most unforgettable moments in Hindi films wouldn't have been the same. The Amritsar-born Rafi began his career as a playback singer in the early 1940s. A versatile singer, who could render classical, rock and roll, indeed any kind of song with ease, he was Hindi film's favourite male voice through the 1950s and 1960s. "Whether he was singing in the lowest, middle or highest octave, there was no difference in his voice. His throw of words remains matchless. People try to copy him but nobody can recreate the same magic," says singer Jaspal Singh, who became well-known after delivering hits in films such as Geet Gaata Chal (1975) and Saawan Ko Aane Do (1979). Singh has a lasting regret. He had recorded a duet with Rafi for music director duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Phoolon ke basanti gehne, dharti ke dulhan ne pehne in 1979 for Sarhad.
