'The Pitch' is a segment on ABC TV's 'The Gruen Transfer' where two ad companies compete to 'sell the unsellable'. Past example of selling the unsellable include invading New Zealand, compulsory euthanasia for the elderly, cosmetic surgery for children and introducing a parent licence. This week, the two companies have to sell the idea of 'banning all religion'. THIS IS A SATIRICAL SEGMENT. Jared Diamond, professor of geography at UCLA, received the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction in 1998 for Guns, Germs and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies. In 1999, he received the National Medal of Science. His most recent book is Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed (2004). The first installment of my original series "Discovering Religion". In this episode I discuss the apparent conflicts that exist with our present observable reality and our past archaic religious traditions that not only seem to contradict one another, but all that we have discovered through the scientific method. Note: The Shia denomination of Islam believes that a young boy by the name of Mahdi, born in 869 CE, is Muhammad al-Mahdi, the Twelfth Imam. The Shia believe Mahdi was hidden by God at the age of five where he remains awaiting for God to proclaim the time of his return. From wikipedia: The Twelfth Imam will return as the Mahdi with "a company of his chosen ones," and his enemies will be led by the one-eyed Antichrist and the Sufyani. The two armies will fight "one final apocalyptic battle" where the Mahdi and his forces will prevail over evil. After the Mahdi has ruled Earth for a number of years, Jesus will return. I clearly remember my days as a bible-thumping Jehovah's Witness; looking forward to the End of the World with ill-concealed glee. Of course there was always underlying trepidation which came from hoping that I'd done enough to be found worthy of God's salvation. But in spite of that, the end of the world was something that was vividly imaginable. Illustrations in the Watchtower literature depicted violent scenes of God's wrath dealt upon on wicked mankind, usually with a small group of happy, smiling people (Jehovah's Witnesses) simply walking away from it all. As a young, impressionable woman I could picture myself as one of those people. Someone who had been delivered from all of the world's suffering and pain, and about to embark on a historic journey to a paradise earth, just like God originally intended... Bill Maher is both an atheist and a comedian so it's no surprise that he makes fun of religion. Most of the clips with Bill are taken from his show but sometimes he does a monologue -- in this case at a show he called "I'm not wrong" which he presented in the fundamentalist stronghold, Raleigh, North Carolina in February 2010.
