Game 1 - Celtics 98, Lakers 88 The Celtics drew first blood and won Game 1, improving to 7-2 all-time at home in Game 1 versus the Lakers. With the win, the Celtics improved to 11-1 at home this postseason. Paul Pierce was the story of Game 1. After scoring only 3 points in the 1st half, Pierce erupted for 15 third-quarter points, going 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Pierce left the game with 6:48 in the third quarter with an apparent knee injury and had to be helped off the court in a wheelchair. However, he dramatically returned to the court after just a few minutes, and re-entered the game showing no ill effects from his injury. Pierce finished with 22 points and Kevin Garnett, who had 16 first-half points, ended Game 1 with 24 points. Boston held the Lakers to a 25.0 FG percentage in the fourth quarter. The Lakers lost Game 1 for the first time in the 2008 postseason and fell to 4-9 in their last 13 postseason road games. Spain's loss sees them now likely to meet Greece in a thrilling Eight Final match that highlights the depth of quality teams in this tournament. For the first half, Spain executed superbly in the half court with pick and roll and in the low post, and Lithuania could not consistently find answers. While they fought hard, they trailed by as much15 points, and 43-35 at half time. While the game opened up in the third quarter the Lithuanians could not make the most of it, whereas Spain put on a show, capitilising on sloppy transition defence from their opponents to open up their 18 point lead. After a rather easy path to the 1998 Conference Finals, Chicago faced Indiana in the playoffs for the first time. Both teams won their second-round series 4-1. To the surprise of the Pacers and Larry Bird, who had just won coach of the year, point guard Mark Jackson was guarded by Scottie Pippen. A smart move by Phil Jackson, because Pippen was able to take away Jackson's low-post game with his height advantage and defensive intensity. Forced out of his natural game, Jackson committed seven of the Pacers' 26 turnovers. As great as he was defensively, Pippen shot only 1-for-9 from the field for 4 points. "I knew I was going to sacrifice some of my offensive game when we decided I was going to cover Mark today," Pippen said. Of all the NBA greats who have headlined the All-Star Game in the past, no one's scored more than Kobe Bryant. The Los Angeles Lakers guard broke Michael Jordan's career All-Star Game scoring record on Sunday night. Bryant needed 19 points to eclipse Jordan's record of 262 career All-Star points. He broke the record on a fast-break dunk in the third quarter of the West's 152-149 victory. Bryant, who ended the night with 27 points and also passed Oscar Robertson (246 career All-Star points) and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (251 points) during the game, tied the record on two free throws in the third quarter, taking a break between them to wipe blood from his nose after a hard foul from Miami's Dwyane Wade. Bryant stayed in the game after the hit, but left to be evaluated afterward and did not speak to the media. The Lakers announced later on their website that a CT scan revealed Bryant suffered a nasal fracture. ISTANBUL (2010 FIBA World Championship) -- Lithuania stunned Argentina 104-85 to close the Quarterfinals of the FIBA World Championship at the Sinar Erdem Dome. Now Lithuania plays the USA in the semifinals on Saturday, September 11. Lithuania was head to head with Argentina in the first couple of minutes but their sticky man to man defense, focused on Scola and that didn't allow any passes inside nor any comfortable shots, gave them all the confidence to start their run. The Lithuanians took off with an 8-0 run to be up 17-10 after a basket by Robertas Javkotas with 4:06 left. The comeback is Montanas biggest in playoff history. The Grizzlies found themselves down 27 points with 5:40 to go in the third quarter. Marc Mariani returned the ensuing kickoff 98-yards for a touchdown, tied for the third-longest kickoff return in school history. The extra point was no good, but the comeback was on. The Griz defense forced a punt, and the Griz drove 79 yards in 3:05 to score when Mariani caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Selle to narrow the gap to 48-34 with 14:56 left in the fourth. Mariani had a key 38-yard catch to the SDSU 31-yard line in the drive to set up the score. Sadly, the Buckeyes have only been to the Rose Bowl one time since. The Buckeyes struck first on their second possession, and dominated Michigan for basically all of the first half. However, a botched punt return by Gary Lanese with 18 seconds left to go in the second quarter gave Michigan 3 points and a 7-3 deficit entering the half. Michigan came out the better team after intermission, cutting the Buckeyes' lead to 1 on their first possession. They missed a go-ahead FG on their next possession. The Michigan defense absolutely dominated the Buckeye offense for all of the second quarter and most of the third quarter. However, a 3rd down catch by Gary Lanese not only atoned for his previous boner at the end of the 2nd quarter, but led to an eventual touchdown to make the score 14-6. Michigan fumbled on their very next play, which resulted in the Buckeyes running over the demoralized Michigan defense for a quick touchdown.
