Twelve candidates are standing, but one of the favourites for this largely ceremonial role is incumbent José Ramos-Horta. He is a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and survived an assassination attempt in 2008. Former military chief Taur Matan Ruak, who is backed by prime minister Xanana Gusmao's Congress for the Reconstruction of East Timor (CNRT) party, is also expected to do well in the first round of the ballot. The third contender is former parliamentary speaker Francisco Lu-Olo Guterres, head of the opposition Fretilin party, who lost a run-off to Ramos-Horta in 2007. With a population of 1.1 million, East Timor became independent in 1999 after 24 years of occupation by Indonesia. There are United Nations forces stationed there til the end of the year. United Nations, New York, March 2012 - Patients at Timor-Leste's national hospital, located in the capital, Dili, had an unusual sighting around 7:30 am on Saturday -- in addition to the doctors and nurses on their regular early rounds, mobile voting units were paying their own visits to the hospital's patients. With the South-east Asian nation's presidential election taking place, every effort was being made to ensure that people could exercise their right to vote. Carrying a makeshift voting booth and ballot boxes, staff from the country's Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) moved among the wards to ensure that patients and medical staff were able to cast their vote for one of the 12 candidates. Our friend Brett Nichols, recently journeyed to Timor - Leste to do some good, and spread the love of skateboarding to parts of the world with little to no exposure to the lifestyle. he was hosted by the non profit association Bafuturu which is doing its best to steer the youth of Timor away from violence and fighting towards more positive outlets for their energy like skateboarding. A bunch of shops and fellow skaters pulled together to gather shoes, decks and skate gear for the kids of Timor. This was over a month ago, and by now i'm sure most of the equipments been burned through as the kids are catching the spark and progressing fast.
