More confirmation that Audi will be taking the Quattro model to production has surfaced recently. According to a recent report the Quattro Concept was spotted with design-studio license plates on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, California. The car was being escorted to a photo shoot by the California Highway Patrol. When questioned Audi employees let it slip that the car was, indeed, headed to production. Nissan has unveiled the 2012 GT-R. The previous GT-R produced 530 PS (520 hp / 390 kW) and some record times on the Nurburgring, but Nissan wasn't satisfied with that and has increased output to 550 PS (405 kW / 542 hp). Also new on the 2012 GT-R is an asymmetrical suspension set-up for right-hand drive models which compensates for greater weight on the driver's side of the vehicle. Performance is also improved by means of added rigidity in the body for better handling and a smoother transmission. A new "For TRACK PACK" variant will also be available (currently already an option in Japan and the UK) which drops some weight on the GT-R by means of eliminating the rear bench to make for a real track performer. Despite the added power, fuel-economy has been reduced to 11.8 liters/100 km from the previous 12. The 2012 Nissan GT-R goes on sale in Japan November 24 and hits dealer showrooms in Europe in January.

Specifically designed for the 2012 Focus Electric, the app allows owners to monitor and control their vehicle from a smartphone. More specifically, users can see the car's current state of charge (with an estimated range), setup a charging schedule (so the vehicle can be recharged at night when electricity prices are cheaper), and receive alerts if charging is interrupted unexpectedly. Owners can also use MyFord Mobile to locate the vehicle, remotely lock/unlock doors, and "receive various achievements that can then be posted to your Facebook or Twitter account." While most of the features echo the OnStar app for the Cheverolet Volt, MyFord Mobile goes on step farther by offering MapQuest integration. Volkswagen will run two new ads during the Super Bowl Sunday broadcast on American television. Volkswagen of America will pay dearly to air two 30-second spots - one for the all-new North American Passat model and one for the 2012 Beetle - which will run during the second and fourth quarters of the game. The Passat commercial features a Star Wars theme and was produced with the help of Lucasfilm Ltd., George Lucas' production company. The visuals are accompanied by the well-known "Imperial March" music by film composer John Williams. The ad shows a child dressed as Darth Vader summoning the "Force" upon discovering a Passat in the driveway. Right before the start of the race weekend of the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, Fernando Alonso wanted to try the new 458 Spider, which will be presented at the IAA Frankfurt next Tuesday. The Scuderia Ferrari driver enjoyed the potential of the 8-cylinder mid-rear engine from the Prancing Horse - with hard top and fitted with the same most advanced technological content as the multi-awarded 458 Italia and now available in an "en plein air" version - on the roads around Maranello. The straight-six is 10 cm slimmer than a traditional production 6-cylinder in order to be fit into the Concept 6 design. The 1.6 liter engine generates about the same amount of power as the straight-four of the K-Series but substantially more torque. 130 Nm of torque (96 lb-ft) already becomes available at 2000 rpm. Fuel economy comparable to the straight-four is also had by means of E-gas technology.

The Pagani Zonda R is the Italian supercar maker's most track-focused car. At the foundation of its performance lies a 48-valve 6.0-litre V12 engine acquired from Mercedes-Benz AMG division. It kicks out 750hp (552kW) and maximum torque rated at 710Nm. Accessing this power is a 6-speed sequential gearbox from XTRAC which runs the big Pirelli P Zero rear 335/30/20 tyres. Front rubber measures 255/35/19. Together they hurl the Zonda R from a standing position to 100km/h in 2.7 seconds. Top speed is estimated at over 350km/h.

As expected, the 911 has been stretched some, with a wheelbase 100 mm (10 cm/3.9 inches) longer than it's predecessor. The new 911 Carrera also comes with a body made of intelligent aluminum-steel for reduced weight and greater rigidity. The car has a wider track at the front and rides on 20-inch wheels. Under that rear bonnet comes a 3.4 liter boxer engine with 350 PS (257 kW / 345 bhp) for the standard Carrera and a 3.8 liter with 400 PS (294 kW / 394 bhp) for the Carrera S (torque figures were not provided). The Carrera S with the PDK transmission does the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 4.3 seconds - 4.1 with the Sport Plus function in the optional Sport Chrono package. Those numbers are 4.6 and 4.4 seconds, respectively, for the standard 911 Carrera. Other technologies available include the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), available for the first time on the Carrera S, which provides an optimized cornering with intelligent distribution of lateral forces. The 2012 Porsche 911 will make its global debut at the Frankfurt motor show on September 13. The model goes on sale on December 3 but will start taking orders as early as September 1. Mercedes has officially unveiled the SLS AMG Roadster, ahead of its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Designed to be the pinnacle of open-top motoring, the Roadster features a three-ply soft top that can be raised or lowered in eleven seconds at speeds up to 31 mph (50 km/h). While the roof is fully automatic and has a glass rear window, it doesn't steal any trunk space as the SLS has a cargo capacity of 6.1 cubic feet (173 liters) regardless of the top's position. Inside, the cabin is elegantly appointed with designo leather upholstery, metallic trim and AMG sports seats with AIRSCARF. Options include a Bang & Olufsen audio system and an AMG Performance Media system that displays real-time vehicle information. Power is provided by a 6.3-liter (6208cc) V8 engine that produces 563 hp (420 kW / 571 PS) and 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque. It is connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which enables the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and hit a limited top speed of 197 mph (317 km/h), same as the SLS Gullwing. To ensure the Roadster handles just like the SLS Gullwing, engineers made numerous improvements to strengthen the chassis. Toyota has set a new electric vehicle lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Driving a modified Radical, dubbed the EV P001, Jochen Krumbach completed the 20.8 km (12.9 mile) long course in 7 minutes and 47.794 seconds which buried the previous record of 9 minutes and 1.338 seconds that was set by the Peugeot EX1 concept. According to Rob Leupen, Toyota Motorsport's Director of Business Operations, "This is a very impressive achievement which really shows the huge potential for electric powertrains to deliver fast, exciting action on the race track. There's no doubt that electric motorsport can be every bit as thrilling as traditional racing and it was an amazing sensation to watch the TMG electric vehicle fly past on the Nordschleife, with only the sound of wind rushing past and tires squealing." As we have previously reported, the P001 features a 41.5 kWh lithium-ceramic battery which powers two electric motors that develop 381 PS (280 kW / 375 hp) and 800 Nm (590 Nm) of torque.
